“River Where the Moon Rises” Reborn as Webtoon, Collaboration between Korean and Japanese Authors

The historical K-drama “River Where the Moon Rises” is going to be reborn as a webtoon.

KBS 2TV’s drama “River Where the Moon Rises”, which aired in 2021, has been confirmed to be reborn as a webtoon.

The webtoon version was planned from the second half of 2021 and took a year and a half to produce. It will be simultaneously serialized in Kakao Page and Naver Series from May 1st in Korea.

The production of the webtoon version of “River Where the Moon Rises,” which received high praise when it was also aired on Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, is drawing attention as a collaboration between Japanese and Korean authors.

Since it is a Korean historical drama set in the Goguryeo era, Japanese staff members who participated in the production from the concept stage reportedly studied not only the drama, but also the ancient Korean history.

The screenwriter of the drama, Han Ji Hoon, expressed his excitement about the drama being reborn as a webtoon with a long narrative.

IMXTOON, the webtoon production company, is producing webtoons based on dramas from KBS, MBC, and other broadcasters in Korea, and is also handling foreign language localization in-house by taking the unconventional approach of rebirthing TV dramas as webtoons.

Their goal is to allow all viewers who love K-dramas to enjoy the dramas again as readers in the world of comics and to make it easier for viewers who have not seen the original works to access them.
