Red Velvet’s technical issue becomes hot topic amid Kpop’s constant lip-syncing

Whilst Kpop groups are being criticized over lip-syncing accusations, one particular stage of Red Velvet draws attention.

Recently, Kpop fans have been paying close attention to Kpop idol’s live stages, especially amid constant lip-syncing accusations. For instance, IVE members Jang Wonyoung and Leeseo have been drowned in criticisms after their lip-synced cover of IU’s “Strawberry Moon”, while not even dancing. National broadcasting station KBS even featured the performance on their news, and posed the question, “Can they be considered singers?

At the same time, other 4th generation idols, such as NewJeans and aespa, also fell under the public’s ire, and are now being compared to their seniors. Some netizens also brought up previous live stages of other groups, and Red Velvet’s 2017 performance of “Rookie” on “Music Bank” is a popular mention.

In the aforementioned stage, the microphone of Red Velvet member Seulgi ran into a technical issue. As a result, it couldn’t amplify Seulgi’s singing during the performance, and Seulgi had to take it on herself to sing louder and yet keep the same level of energy.

Then, when a staff member came on stage with a hand-held microphone, it only took Seulgi 3 seconds to grab the device and deliver the chorus of “Rookie”. Even more impressive, Seulgi’s voice remained so stable, it’d be impossible to notice her troubles through the voice alone. Seulgi’s excellent execution and professionalism thus drew a lot of admiration from viewers.
