“Queen of Tears” Kim Ji-won “My relationship with Kim Soo-hyun is like a magnet”

Actress Kim Ji-won embarks on a new challenge as the character Hong Hae-in in "Queen of Tears"

Kim Ji-won, who plays the role of department store queen Hong Hae-in in tvN’s new Saturday-Sunday drama “Queen of Tears” (written by Park Ji-eun / directed by Jang Young-woo, Kim Hee-won / produced by Studio Dragon, Culture Depot, Showrunners), which will premiere on March 9th, expressed her affection for the character.

“Queen of Tears” follows the dizzying crisis and miraculous rebirth of love between Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won), the third-generation Queens Group chaebol and department store queen, and Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun), the son of Yongdu-ri and supermarket prince.

Kim Ji-won shared the reason for choosing the work, “I wanted to portray the life of Hong Hae-in, who is not one-dimensional, but appears cold yet lovely, strong yet delicate. I thought I could take on a new challenge with a role that has a different atmosphere from my previous works.” Therefore, she expressed her readiness for the work, hoping to hear comments like “This role suits you really well“.

She further revealed her immersion in Hong Hae-in’s emotions, “Hong Hae-in appeared to have lived without any deficiencies, a person who seems cold and straightforward at first glance. Since Hae-in is accustomed to running forward while overlooking her surroundings and is inexperienced in restoring relationships while tending to wounds, her pain and loneliness felt even greater and somewhat pitiful to me.”

Moreover, as Hong Hae-in is a character who does not lose her upright posture even in the face of difficulties, Kim Ji-won explained, “I tried to show the drop in emotions when that upright posture of Hae-in is about to break.” This explanation heightens anticipation for her performance.

Especially after the release of Hong Hae-in’s photos, much attention has been drawn to the styling. Kim Ji-won stated, “I considered how Hong Hae-in’s glamorous styling could be connected to the character’s situation and emotions rather than simply representing affluence.” She aroused interest by introducing the styling point, “The worse the mood, the more glamorous the clothes!

Meanwhile, the relationship between Hong Hae-in and Baek Hyun-woo is also considered another point of interest. Kim Ji-won, describing their relationship as “magnetic poles” that seem to push each other away while needing each other to become complete and determine the direction and path together, confessed, “Because of Kim Soo-hyun, the atmosphere on the set became really comfortable and cheerful. Thanks to him, I was able to portray the chemistry between the couple well.”

“Queen of Tears” will premiere on March 9th at 9:10 PM.
