Set in a fictional 21st-century constitutional monarchy version of South Korea, MBC’s upcoming Friday–Saturday drama Perfect Crown tells the story of an unusual romance between two people trapped by their social status. The plot follows a wealthy chaebol woman who seemingly has everything but remains frustrated by her status as a commoner and a royal prince who has noble blood but cannot truly possess anything he wants.

The project first attracted major attention in the second half of 2024 when the casting of IU and Byeon Woo-seok was confirmed. The excitement grew even further when fans realized that the two actors would be reuniting on screen nearly 10 years after appearing together in the SBS drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo.

A Contract Marriage Between a Chaebol Heiress and a Royal Prince

In the drama, IU plays Seong Hee-joo, the CEO of the beauty brand Castle Beauty. Born as the illegitimate child of the powerful Castle Group, she possesses stunning looks, sharp intelligence, and fierce ambition. Although she is recognized as an outstanding business leader and has even won a prestigious Best Entrepreneur Award, her status as a commoner becomes a major weakness in a society where aristocratic authority still dominates under a constitutional monarchy. Determined to overcome this limitation, Seong Hee-joo sets her sights on a contract marriage with Grand Prince Ian, one of the most beloved members of the royal family.

Perfect Crown

Byeon Woo-seok portrays Grand Prince Ian, a character whose background makes him both admired and restricted. As the younger brother of the late king, he has spent most of his life hiding his ambitions because he was born into the role of the royal family’s “second son.” Despite living quietly in the shadow of the throne, the public views him as “the most beloved royal in Korea,” praising his elegant appearance, natural charisma, and commanding presence.

After the deaths of his father and older brother, Ian finds himself effectively leading the royal family while acting as regent for his young nephew, who will ascend the throne. However, powerful factions within the palace continue to keep him in check. His calm life begins to change dramatically when Seong Hee-joo approaches him with an unexpected proposal, a contract marriage that could alter both their destinies.

Supporting Characters Bring More Drama

Supporting the two main characters are Yoo Su-bin and Lee Yeon, who play the leads’ closest aides. Yoo Su-bin takes on the role of Choi Hyun, the loyal assistant to Grand Prince Ian. Beneath his cheerful and gentle appearance lies unwavering devotion to the prince, who once rescued him as a child and became both a mentor and family figure. Their relationship promises a strong bromance dynamic that may become one of the drama’s highlights.

Meanwhile, Lee Yeon plays Do Hye-jung, the chief secretary to Seong Hee-joo. Having grown up overseas, she sees social status as something trivial, no different from a blood type. Although she cannot fully understand Hee-joo’s frustration over her social limitations, she sincerely supports her boss’s ambitions. The friendship between the two women, balancing professionalism and deep loyalty, is expected to become another key storyline.

As Seong Hee-joo and Grand Prince Ian enter into a contract marriage, their aides, Choi Hyun and Do Hye-jung, naturally spend more time together as well. Viewers are already anticipating the chemistry between the two supporting characters, with many expecting Yoo Su-bin and Lee Yeon to deliver performances that complement the main couple’s dynamic.

Perfect Crown

Perfect Crown also carries notable industry recognition. The drama originally won the Excellence Award in the long-form series category at the 2022 MBC Drama Script Contest. Director Park Joon-hwa previously praised the script in an interview with Cine21, noting that it was written by a young female writer in her early 30s and contained the kind of imaginative storytelling modern audiences enjoy.

The drama also continues MBC’s long tradition of series set in a constitutional monarchy, following earlier hits such as Princess Hours (Goong), Goong S, and The King 2 Hearts. With Princess Hours famously reaching a peak rating of 28.7% in 2006, many viewers are curious whether Perfect Crown can revive the network’s legacy of successful, royal-themed dramas.
