Outrage Grows Over Taiwanese Actor Huang Weijin’s Insincere Apology for Making Sexual Remark towards LE SSERAFIM
However, anger is growing due to the insincerity of Huang Weijin’s half-hearted apology.
On the broadcast of the 2024 Taiwan Superstar Red and White Entertainment Awards on January 27th (local time), LE SSERAFIM appeared as a guest. Before their performance, LE SSERAFIM attempted to eat sweet potatoes using bamboo skewers. Upon seeing this, Huang Weijin commented, “I want to stick it too, the sweet potato balls, under them.”
Although co-star Lulu Huang Lu Zi Yin expressed surprise and said, “It seems like a slip of the tongue,” Huang Weijin replied, “I just wanted to have a meal with them, no other intentions.”
After the broadcast, fans poured fierce criticism on Huang Weijin. In response, on January 28th, he posted on his personal account, “I want to talk about what happened on stage. I wanted to react instinctively because Yunjun said she would stick a sweet potato ball with a bamboo skewer.”
He continued, “I made a misunderstood remark. What I wanted to say was that it’s a joyful thing to be able to eat with idols I like. There was no other meaning, but if viewers felt uncomfortable, I apologize. It’s my fault, and I appreciate criticism and guidance.”
After Huang Weijin’s apology, Taiwanese celebrities rallied behind him. Lulu Huang Lu Zi Yin publicly supported him, saying, “Huang Weijin did his best at every moment to react on the spot, and I could feel his sincerity and diligence.”
This has further fueled the fans’ anger. In particular, fans are pointing out the insensitivity of making sexual remarks even when there is a minor in LE SSERAFIM. While inappropriate comments should not be made to any member, making such remarks in front of Hong Eunchae, who was born in 2006 and is only 18 years old, is considered unacceptable.
Moreover, controversy has escalated as Huang Weijin’s apology lacks genuine reflection and does not include an apology to LE SSERAFIM members. Instead, he included phrases such as ‘instinctive reaction’ and ‘misunderstanding’, intensifying the controversy.
LE SSERAFIM is set to release their mini 3rd album ‘Easy’ on February 19th at 6 PM KST.
