Does the new drama Our Blues remind you of Hometown Cha Cha Cha?
tvN’s latest series Our Blues is an interesting and gentle breeze among April K-dramas and has so far left quite a good impression. Many viewers have also noticed the similarities between Our Blues and a successful drama released last year, Hometown Cha Cha Cha.
Our Blues revolves around different life stories of various characters living on Jeju Island. Soft and light-hearted, the drama portrays the daily lives of characters and their love stories.
It is pretty obvious that Our Blues and Hometown Cha Cha Cha are both set in a seaside village and talk about the villagers. The similar sceneries of the sea and beaches have made the two strikingly similar in terms of cinematography – which consists mostly of outdoor scenes and is filled with hues of bright pastels and ocean blue.
Compared to Hometown Cha Cha Cha, which focuses more on the main couple, Our Blues covers a diverse set of characters, which makes for more variety and distinct perspectives.
However, despite this difference, the two dramas may as well be a set of twins.
It doesn’t help that actress Shin Min Ah appears in both projects, and her character in Our Blues really resembles Hometown Cha Cha Cha’s Hye Jin, from personality, expressions, to fashion sense.
This begs the question, what if Shin Min Ah will continue to act this same way in upcoming episodes of Our Blues? And if she does, then does that make Hometown Cha Cha Cha’s Hye Jin and Our Blues’ Seon Ah basically the same character?
All in all, there’s the risk that Our Blues may become a copy of Hometown Cha Cha Cha. Coupled with the latter’s huge success, will Our Blue’s popularity be of its own or just something it inherits from another drama?
It is also important to note that despite having a famous cast of Lee Byung Hun, Han Ji Min, Kim Woo Bin, and more, Our Blues seems to lack one thing from its predecessor: recognition among young audiences.
Kim Seon Ho, who starred as the male lead of Hometown Cha Cha Cha, had gained huge popularity via his previous role as Han Ji Pyeong of Start Up, and thus is a more familiar face to young viewers.
Of course, these are just initial opinions about Our Blues. Hopefully, the drama will soon gain its own colors, and manage to separate itself from the shadow of Hometown Cha Cha Cha.
