NewJeans Makes History as 1st Korean Group to Win Group of the Year at 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards

Among K-pop singers, NewJeans is the first to receive the Group of the Year award at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards.

NewJeans’ agency, ADOR, announced on March 8th, “NewJeans won Group of the Year at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards held in Los Angeles on March 6th (local time).”

According to ADOR, the last winner in this category was in 2015. The American girl group Fifth Harmony received the award nine years ago.

American singer Lainey Wilson, who served as a presenter at the event, named NewJeans as the winner and introduced, “They led a new wave of girl groups in K-pop, which has long been male-dominated.”

Standing on the stage, NewJeans expressed their overwhelmed feelings, “We can’t believe we’re participating in such a wonderful awards ceremony filled with amazing artists today.

They continued, “All the artists here have inspired us, and thanks to all of you, our love and passion for music have grown even more. We express our gratitude.”

They also said, “Looking back on the past two years, we have been incredibly blessed. We have experienced many new and exciting things and had the best year.”

NewJeans added, “All of this would have been impossible without the help of everyone, including our fans, Bunnies.” They concluded, “We will continue to do our best to move forward. We want to continue to share our love for music with all of you.”

lNewJeans also presented a special performance on stage to their hit songs such as ‘ETA’ and ‘Super Shy.’ 

NewJeans officially debuted in July 2022 and quickly gained popularity and swept various awards at major music award ceremonies in Korea.

They even won three consecutive awards at the Korean Popular Music Awards, where musicality is evaluated as a criterion.

The Billboard Women in Music Awards has been held since 2007 as an American music award ceremony where the best female artists, creators, producers, and executives who have had a significant impact on the music industry gather.
