Netflix’s drama “Mr. Plankton” embroiled in fly tipping controversy before release

Netflix’s new original series “Mr. Plankton” was embroiled in “nuisance controversy” (fly tipping) before its release

On Oct 16th, allegations arose that the “Mr. Plankton” team illegally dumped trash after shooting in Jeju Island.

It was claimed that the production team discarded food containers, cigarette butts, cups and even paper with staff’s personal information and shooting locations in them.

Moreover, besides illegal littering, the “Mr. Plankton” team is also under suspicion of causing inconvenience to the residents of the Huam-dong area. One netizen told Sports Seoul, “During the shoot, the staff parked in residents’ parking spaces and blocked the road, asking repeatedly, ‘Where do you live, why are you parking here?'”

As the nuisance controversy escalated, the “Mr. Plankton” production company stated, “On Oct 15th, we conducted the shoot from morning to afternoon at Hwasun Golden Sand Beach. Since the shooting was completed after sunset, a cleaning plan was scheduled for that day and the next morning.”

They continued, “Upon confirmation, the production crew paid more attention to the cleanup the next morning. We will be more careful during the shooting process in the future.”

Previously, Netflix’s “You Have Done Well” and TVING’s “Death’s Game” were also embroiled in controversy for blocking tourist spots and using offensive language towards citizens. Aside from these incidents, several other dramas were at the center of controversy for poor cleanup.

Netflix’s series “Mr. Plankton” starring Woo Do-hwan, Lee Yoo-mi, Oh Jung-se and Kim Hae-sook depicts the story of people who can’t blend in or connect with anyone, just like plankton.

This work is scripted by Jo Yong, the writer of “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay”, and directed by Hong Jong-chan, who directed Netflix’s “Juvenile Justice”.
