National Police Agency Employee Argues Against The Public Blaming Police For Lee Sun-kyun’s Death
On December 27th, A, an employee at the National Police Agency, posted on the anonymous online community “Blind” for office workers, saying “I can’t sympathize with the death of the suspect Lee Sun-kyun”.
A said, “Why couldn’t you be confident about yourself?”, adding “The police only conducted the investigation in accordance with the procedures”.
They continued, “Based on the credible statement of the female director of the entertainment establishment involved in the drug case, the police requested the attendance of Lee Sun-kyun and investigated him according to the procedures”, adding “They had not concluded that he was a suspect nor sent him to the prosecution. Not only for celebrities like him but for anyone else, the procedure would still go from reports, being booked, then being investigated based on statements and evidence”.
A added, “At the moment, the government has declared a large-scale war against drugs with responses on the national level, so even the slightest connection to drugs can also be considered a subject of strict investigation. In this case, it happened to Lee Sun-kyun”.
Regarding the fact that details of the investigation were revealed during the internal investigation stage, A explained, “If the investigation process has been carried out to some extent and this person is really likely to be accused, details can be revealed. If the police leak details without even summoning the person as a potential suspect, without initiating a proper investigation and obtaining statements, there will be various external pressures as he would not listen to the statement and they won’t be able to share details of the investigation even if they want to.”
A continued, “Was it the police who confirmed that he took drugs when the case was at the level of drug allegations? Or was it the media or you guys?”, adding “Aren’t you guys the ones who want to know everything more than anyone else? The police and the media are responsible for this incident but you guys can’t also avoid responsibility”.
Lastly, this person said, “Lee Sun-kyun’s death is unfortunate. However, if he was truly innocent, he should have endured everything until the end. Instead of making excuses like ‘I thought it was a sleeping pill’, he should have either admitted his mistake and apologized if he did it or denied it firmly if he didn’t”, adding “It’s not something that should be glorified by death. I don’t think this case is worse enough to die for. There are people who do worse things but continue living. May he rest in peace, but I won’t sympathize with his death”.
Following Lee Sun-kyun’s sudden death, many people have been pouring criticism on the police, claiming that they pressured him with excessive investigation. After Lee Sun-kyun received negative results in all kinds of drug tests, the police faced a backlash for starting an investigation relying only on the statement of the entertainment establishment head, who had already been convicted six times, without clear evidence.
