‘Nam Tae-hyun’s Drug Accomplice’ Seo Min-jae, “Mom Retired From Teaching Because She Felt Ashamed”

On December 24th, JTBC released an interview with Seo Min-jae. Earlier in August last year, Seo Min-jae posted on Instagram revealing that she had taken methamphetamine with her ex-boyfriend Nam Tae-hyun. 

Recalling that time when she made the drug revelation on SNS, Seo Min-jae said, “I mistakenly thought that drugs would relieve my depression, but my condition worsened due to the side effects. I think I made the posts during the blackout after overdosing on psychiatric drugs”.

She added, “I wrote the posts then jumped (from the second floor), but didn’t remember anything at all”.

Seo Min-jae lost her job as a car mechanic due to the incident and her family also had to quit their jobs. She confessed, “My mom was a middle school teacher and she said she felt ashamed when standing in front of her students. That’s why she retired”, adding “I feel so sorry that mom had to take responsibility for her child’s crime”.

Seo Min-jae continued, “Even now, the public still looks at female drug takers with more negative judgments. Continuous negative discussions in sexual aspects made it more difficult for me to overcome. I haven’t seen any female drug takers who are brave enough to step forward”.

She said, “I took drugs and ruined my life as well as the lives of people around me. I sincerely don’t want others to experience the same thing.”

In 2020, Seo Min-jae, who was born in 1993, appeared on Channel A’s reality dating program “Heart Signal 3” and aroused keen attention when introducing herself as “the first female mechanic in a college open recruitment. Known as “technology school goddess” who graduated from Inha University majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Seo Min-jae worked at Hyundai Motor’s service center as a mechanic but already lost her job due to the drug incident.
