In a gesture of sensitivity and solidarity, K-pop group MEOVV made a thoughtful change during their stage at the 2025 MAMA Awards, held on November 28 at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong, just days after a tragic residential fire rocked the region.
MEOVV performed a dynamic mashup of their songs “Hands Up” and “Burning Up,” but notably modified the latter’s chorus lyric from “Burning Up” to “Turn It Up.” The alteration was a respectful nod to the local mourning atmosphere following the devastating fire at Wang Fook Court in Tai Po, which claimed nearly 100 lives, according to international reports.
The original phrase “Burning Up”, associated with fiery imagery, was deemed inappropriate in the wake of the tragedy. In addition to the lyric change, MEOVV refrained from using pyrotechnics or flame visuals—typically a hallmark of high-energy performances—opting instead for a powerful choreography-driven stage while dressed in dark-colored outfits that echoed the tone of mourning.

The tragedy’s impact was felt across the event. The MAMA red carpet was canceled, and major Chinese stars like Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat withdrew from their scheduled appearances as global presenters.
MEOVV’s response stands as a subtle yet moving example of how artists can show empathy and awareness on global stages. Their performance not only captivated the audience musically but also resonated with a deeper message of respect, proving that even small changes can carry profound meaning.
