In the wake of a catastrophic fire that claimed the lives of 128 people in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district, the 2025 MAMA Awards will proceed as planned but with a profound tribute: all presenters will don memorial ribbons during the ceremony.
According to organizers, CJ ENM has mandated that every award presenter, the majority of whom are actors, wear the ribbons while on stage. Initially, the wearing of ribbons was optional, with some artists inquiring about how to obtain them. However, due to overwhelming concerns and inquiries, the organizers reversed course, deciding that all presenters must participate in the tribute. The ribbons will be distributed onsite by the production team.

This year’s list of presenters includes a star-studded lineup such as Go Youn Jung, Park Hyung Sik, Ahn Hyo Seop, Lee Kwang Soo, Im Siwan, Hyeri, and many more. Notably, actors Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh, originally scheduled to present, withdrew due to the tragedy.
The horrific fire broke out on November 26 at 2:52 PM in Wang Fuk Court, a residential complex in northern Hong Kong. As of November 28, Xinhua News confirmed 128 deaths, with the toll expected to rise. Emergency responders, including one firefighter, were among the deceased, and over 300 people are injured or missing.

In light of this, the MAMA Awards team held emergency discussions and decided to continue with the event due to practical considerations but opted to cancel the red carpet and mass stage exits to maintain a somber tone. The show will focus on delivering consolation and hope through performances.
Additionally, CJ and the MAMA Awards donated 20 million HKD (approx. 3.78 billion KRW) to relief efforts. The organization expressed deep condolences via Chinese platform Weibo: “We are heartbroken by this tragedy. Our donation aims to support emergency aid and recovery efforts. We hope it provides comfort to the victims and their families.”
The MAMA Awards added that they are crafting a memorial segment under the theme “Support Hong Kong”, aiming to unite the audience in mourning and remembrance. They emphasized their belief in the healing power of music and promised a carefully curated stage that prioritizes tribute over spectacle.
This compassionate response highlights how global entertainment platforms like the MAMA Awards can use their influence to foster solidarity and provide comfort in times of crisis.
