“Meaningless? Or necessary?”… Viewers show divided opinions regarding the bathtub exposure scene of “The Glory” Choi Hye Jung

All the episodes of Part 2 of “The Glory” were released on March 10th. Upon its release, there was a server crash on Netflix.

As everyone wished, the drama ended with Moon Dong Eun (Song Hye Kyo)’s victory. The story stayed within its original plot, but also reached an appropriate conclusion that left a lasting impression. In particular, Moon Dong Eun’s meticulous revenge plan developed rapidly, and the actors’ performances became more outstanding.

However, some scenes still received mixed reactions. In particular, a scene showing Choi Hye Jung (Cha Joo Young) revealing her upper body drew disappointment from viewers.

In fact, Choi Hye Jung boldly exposed not only the side of her body but also her chest, leading to criticism over the increased proportion of unnecessary nude scenes in Part 2.

Netizens questioned the director’s intention in making those “unnecessary scenes” through various online communities and SNS sites. In the controversial scene, Choi Hye Jung takes off her clothes and even underwear then gets into a bathtub with her back and side clearly exposed.

Like Part 1, “The Glory” Part 2 was rated as ‘not suitable for teenagers’. The Korea Media Rating Board explained that the show “depicts the process of revenge by victims of violence and their allies, the destruction of the perpetrators, and the repeated expressions of smoking, drug use, and sexual expression and abusive language.”

It was revealed that Cha Joo Young gained around 5-6 kg to portray the glamorous appearance of Choi Hye Jung better. In Part 1, Choi Hye Jung wore many tightly fitted outfits that expose parts of her chest to highlight her character’s traits. As the conflict between the characters intensifies in Part 2, the number of provocative scenes has increased.

In response, some viewers commented, “I found Hye Jung’s nude scenes meaningless and uncomfortable”, “I didn’t want to see Hye Jung undressing”, “Were those nude scenes really necessary?”, “Did we really need such exposure scenes?”, “I partly agree that there were too many unnecessary exposure scenes in ‘The Glory’ Part 2. But of course, I can understand it in context…”, “I think the female actresses must have had a hard time. They must have used up a lot of energy for scenes like that”, and “I’m disappointed thinking that Cha Joo Young’s exposure scenes might be used as provocative thumbnails or titles on YouTube”, etc.

However, other netizens expressed different opinions, saying “It’s not even a 15+ drama, why are people so sensitive?”, “I didn’t mind those scenes because they suit the character’s personality”, “It seems like they included those scenes due to the flow of the dialogues”, “I think they only included the scenes because they were necessary”, “I think the exposure parts went well with the character’s personality. I enjoyed watching the drama”, “I think the producers were trying to express the member who is the easiest to play around with among them. I think the scenes were necessary”, “They weren’t that erotic”, and “It’s okay to include them. The drama is rated 19+ anyways”, etc.
