Lee Ji-ah Reacts to Question about Divorce K-drama, “Why does it have to be a sensitive subject?”

On January 25, magazine GQ Korea released an interview with actress Lee Ji-ah

It is known that Lee Ji-ah will star as the female lead Kim Sa-ra in the upcoming JTBC K-drama “Queen of Divorce”, where her character becomes a professional “divorce resolver”.

Interestingly, Lee Ji-ah has actually experienced divorce herself, at a young age. She married Korea’s top singer Seo Taiji in 1997, only to divorce after two years. The news of their marriage was not known until reports of a property division lawsuit surfaced, creating a shocking “scandal” at the time.

When asked by GQ Korea if she hesitated to choose “Queen of Divorce”, considering the sensitive subject matter, Lee Ji-ah showed a strong mentality by coolly responding, “Why? Why does it have to be a sensitive subject? I’ve never thought about it that way.”

The actress further questioned, “Isn’t it common for people who got married to get divorced because they wanted to be happy? It’s not a big deal; it’s a part of our daily lives. Why should I perceive it as something sensitive?”

Then, Lee Ji-ah was asked if her experience made her better at handling certain aspects in the K-drama, the actress answered, “There are aspects I can understand better. Rather than specifically marriage and divorce, I have experienced a lot of pain in relationships, in meeting and parting. I’ve stood on a higher step, looking down and thinking, ‘Yeah, I know it all.'”

It is known that Lee Ji-ah was in a public relationship with actor Jung Woo-sung when her past divorce was reported, which eventually led to a breakup.

In the interview with GQ, the actress described her personality as having two extreme sides like black and white.

“Some people remember me as very feminine, while others think of me as boyish and easygoing. I like the elements of both these extremes with very different tastes. ‘Do I like this or that?’ There were times when I was confused, but that itself was me”, she explained.

Regarding the question of how to love oneself, Lee Ji-ah emphasized the importance of being whole before being able to love someone else, adding that it’s important to prioritize self-love.

Finally, when asked if she loves herself, the actress replied, “I truly love myself” with a sense of resolution.
