Lee Je-hoon and Yoo Hae-jin’s “Moral Hazard” embroiled in controversy over scenario

The movie “Moral Hazard” starring Lee Je-hoon and Yoo Hae-jin was embroiled in controversy

According to Ilgan Sports on Dec 19th, suspicions have been raised that Film Blossom’s CEO Choi Yoon-jin, who is in charge of directing the movie “Moral Hazard”, plagiarized someone else’s scenario.

According to the Screenwriters Guild of Korea, in 2018, Choi Yoon-jin, who was a judge for a competition, saw a scenario submitted by writer Kim Ki-yong, liked it, contacted him, entered into a contract, made some changes to the settings, then terminated the contract midway through.

The Screenwriters Guild of Korea claimed that Choi Yoon-jin created a modified version of the “Deep Sea” scenario with added elements and registered herself as the sole author of the “Deep Sea” scenario after terminating the contract with Kim Ki-yong.

This issue came to light after Choi Yoon-jin signed a joint production contract for “Moral Hazard” with the production company The Lamp. The Lamp reportedly confirmed the existence of the original “Deep Sea” scenario and contacted writer Kim Ki-yong.

The movie “Moral Hazard” is currently under controversy regarding the dispute over who should be credited as the main scriptwriter.

Writer Park Hyun-woo, commissioned by Choi Yoon-jin, wrote a screenplay related to the Lone Star incident. However, when the movie “Black Money” based on the Lone Star incident was released, Choi rewrote the script. Park argued that although the subject matter changed, Choi actively utilized the screenplay he had written.

The Screenwriters Guild of Korea concluded that for “Moral Hazard”, Park Hyun-woo was the writer of the first draft, and Choi Yoon-jin was the writer of the second draft.

Meanwhile, writer Kim Ki-yong recently filed a criminal complaint for copyright infringement against Choi Yoon-jin, claiming that she registered herself as the sole copyright holder for “Deep Sea” even though she was not the author. The police initiated an investigation but forwarded the case to the prosecutor’s office without charges, citing difficulties in definitively determining a violation of copyright law. Kim filed a request for reconsideration, and the case has a statute of limitations until Dec 27th.

“Moral Hazard” is the story of a confrontation between Korea’s No.1 soju company, which is in danger of bankruptcy, and a global investor aiming for a company that is on the verge of bankruptcy.
