LE SSERAFIM, we thought they were just “HYBE’s princesses”, but…

What will trainees go through before they debut as idols? Documentaries with the bare faces of artists or celebrities always arouse public curiosity.

Numerous star documentaries have come to fans over the past few years. In a situation where face-to-face activities have become difficult due to COVID-19, their documentary has been in the spotlight.

In May 2020, BTS introduced “BREAK THE SILENCE”, which contains 351 days of their world tour journey, and SEVENTEEN also unveiled “HIT THE ROAD”, which contains behind-the-scenes stories of the world tour “ODE TO YOU”.

TWICE‘s “TWICE: Seize the Light”, which was released in April 2020, contains the process of the JYP girl group from trainees to growing into a representative girl group in Korea.

In October of the same year, Blackpink released ‘Blackpink: Light Up the Sky’ in partnership with Netflix. In addition to Blackpink, Netflix produced documentaries of world-famous pop stars such as Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, highlighting their bare-face sides.

The public always reacts to star documentaries. If the performance DVD highlights their splendid side, the documentary also portrays the fierce life and shadows behind the scenes.

Also, we see the ‘ordinary-people’ side of celebrities. They also go through their daily lives not so differently from ours, feel the same loneliness and emptiness, and get frustrated when faced with difficult tasks. When I see them sweating while being pointed out continuously in the practice room, I was sometimes shocked, saying, “They live so hard like that.”

The documentary ‘LE SSERAFIM – The world is my oyster’ by Le SSERAFIM, released on the 17th, has attracted interest because it explores the realistic aspects more clearly than any other documentary.

While the existing documentary traces the past of the people who have already reached the top and looks at their journey to becoming the best, LE SSERAFIM captured this time in depth by focusing on the formation of the team and the first stage.

We thought they were “princesses” who debuted without much difficulty with a strong background called HYBE, but we can meet the bare face of LE SSERAFIM, who suffered more twists and turns than anyone else and were not free from the eyes and prejudices around them.

The members’ interviews were honest enough to make viewers wonder “Are they allowed to say this?” Sakura calmly accepted negative views and the saying that her third debut was greed. She made it clear that she would continue to pursue her goal by confessing, “I’ll do everything I want to do. I don’t want to regret it.”

Kim Chae-won, who returned with a 180-degree different image compared to IZ*ONE days and sparked a heated debate among fandom, expressed her strong desire for transformation, “I have to show a new side. I think it’ll be more interesting if I do that. I’m getting greedy.”

Besides, the scene in which girls shed tears while practicing together as the debut group and the scene in which they expressed anxiety about the future were all broadcasted without editing.

LE SSERAFIM’s documentary cleverly created a dramatic atmosphere with a scene in which Kazuha, the team’s secret weapon, was cast right after the crisis moment of member change. The scene in which she greeted the members online due to COVID-19 was also full of realism, giving the impression of “real behind-the-scenes”.

Also, the documentary does not give fantasies like “We were all close from the beginning”. It showed the process of member change realistically as well as revealed the awkwardness and pressure felt by Hong Eun-chae, who joined last, without editing.

Rather than beautifully directing the process of the five members getting to know each other, the documentary increased the sense of reality by capturing it raw. Therefore, it can be seen that the chemistry shown by LE SSERAFIM was not created overnight, but was built up layer by layer over a long period of time.

As such, star documentaries not only show behind-the-scenes stories, but also provide experiences of sharing the path the team has walked. Therefore, the public searches for star documentaries, and artists willingly unfold their daily lives in front of the camera.

Meanwhile, LE SSERAFIM will make a comeback with their second mini-album “ANTIFRAGILE” on Oct 17th.
