LE SSERAFIM is at the center of heated debate as fans and netizens question whether the group has already peaked.

Since the rise of 4th-gen K-pop, the industry has seen an unprecedented surge of girl groups entering the scene. What began as a race dominated by aespa, ITZY, IZ*ONE, and i-dle was quickly reshaped with the arrival of IVE, LE SSERAFIM, and NewJeans. For a time, HYBE’s powerhouse duo—NewJeans and LE SSERAFIM—were viewed as strong contenders, boasting impressive physical album sales and digital success.

But 2024 brought HYBE major setbacks. NewJeans became embroiled in a legal storm, while LE SSERAFIM faced backlash after their controversial Coachella performance. Since then, LE SSERAFIM’s momentum has faltered digital chart results have weakened, and album sales have dropped with each comeback despite the group’s strong lineup of popular members like Sakura, Chaewon, and Yunjin.

The group’s latest EP HOT (March 2025) sold just over 700,000 copies, with about 500,000 in its first week. While solid, the figure pales in comparison to aespa and IVE, who consistently surpass the million mark. Compared to past releases like Unforgiven or Crazy, the results signal a clear decline.

The Coachella controversy marked a turning point. Once admired for bold confidence, the members are now criticized for arrogance and lack of depth in talent. Public perception shifted, and even longtime fans began to drift away. Despite Sakura’s massive fanbase and Chaewon’s popularity with male fans, their combined star power has struggled to offset the group’s waning influence.

Musically, LE SSERAFIM has yet to produce a viral hit on the level of ANTIFRAGILE or FEARLESS. Meanwhile, aespa and IVE dominate global trends by capitalizing on TikTok-friendly sounds. Image-wise, the group has lost the freshness that fueled their early hype.

Some observers also question whether previous sales numbers were inflated by HYBE’s backing and heavy international fandom purchases. Their Billboard chart placement at No. 76, once touted as a milestone, has been compared unfavorably to Wonder Girls’ achievements over a decade ago, suggesting their global reach may not match the narrative.

In short, LE SSERAFIM faces a stability crisis. Their fanbase lacks the strength to consistently drive sales, while their music and image have yet to resonate on a global viral scale. To say the group is “over” might be premature, but unless they reinvent their sound and strategy, LE SSERAFIM risks fading further in a hyper-competitive K-pop landscape where only the strongest survive.
