The hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters is officially getting a sequel. Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix have confirmed development on the next installment, following the movie’s explosive success in both streaming and theatrical screenings.

Since premiering in June, KPop Demon Hunters has become Netflix’s most-watched English-language animated film of all time, surpassing Red Notice with over 236 million views. The film also impressed at the box office during its August sing-along screenings, opening at No. 1 with a $19.2 million debut.

A major driver of its popularity has been the record-breaking soundtrack, which saw four songs enter the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 simultaneously, led by Huntr/x’s “Golden.” The music’s global reach helped fuel streaming numbers as fans rewatched the film multiple times.

The project was born out of a 2021 deal between Sony and Netflix. Netflix covered the film’s $100 million budget plus an additional $25 million for exclusive streaming rights, while Sony retained a share of soundtrack and publishing revenues.

What began as a high-risk collaboration has since turned into a major win. Industry insiders estimate Sony’s profit margins could reach 30 percent, while Netflix gained one of its most successful animated properties to date. The partnership was bolstered by strong ties between Hannah Minghella, head of Netflix Animation and a former Sony executive, and Kristine Belson, Sony Animation’s current president.

Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who co-wrote the film, are expected to return for the sequel. The duo expressed excitement about expanding the story of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey — three global superstars who balance the glitz of K-pop stardom with their secret lives as demon hunters.

While production details are still being finalized, anticipation is already sky-high. With its unprecedented streaming success, strong theatrical momentum, and chart-topping soundtrack, KPop Demon Hunters has solidified its place as a cultural phenomenon.

The sequel is now officially in development, promising fans a continuation of Huntr/x’s thrilling adventures.
