Korean media express discomfort regarding the controversy over BTS’s military service issue. “Is it a place you shouldn’t go?”

Many people are saying that the discussion on whether idol group BTS should be given preferential treatment for military service is an insult to Korean citizens.

It is true that BTS’s achievements are outstanding, but why should the “reward” for those achievements be “military service exemption” or “alternative military service”? In other words, some politicians are now having the perception that not sending individuals to active duty in the army is a “benefit” for them. Isn’t it normal for a country when going to the military becomes a thing to be proud of and a “benefit” for individuals?

To a Korean citizen, being able to proudly join the active service force should be a privilege. If not being sent to the army a preferential treatment for some people, then did the soldiers who are defending the country at the front line enlist because they were not eligible for such a “benefit”?

Some express worries, saying that if BTS enlists, the members will not be able to carry out music activities so it will hinder not only the members’ own interests but also the national interests. That’s definitely due to the nature of military enlistment in which the moment you enter the military, you have to immediately give up on your career and take a long break for a while. If so, shouldn’t the Ministry of National Defense work on the military policies first to create an environment where not only BTS but young Koreans can also continue their dreams even after joining the military?

Why do people keep trying to make BTS not enlist and turn the military into a negative place where you would be in trouble if you enter?

Some also compared BTS’s issue to the previous cases where people who won prizes in leading competitions received military service exemption. Then, reducing the number of people who can get preferential treatment is the first priority.

It is such a disgrace to the nation that the public is conducting a public opinion survey despite knowing that military service is the duty that Korean citizens must fulfill. Will there be more surveys when other singers win 1st place on Billboard and grand prizes at overseas award ceremonies? If they don’t get 1st place but come in 2nd place, will there be a survey or not?

It is obvious that BTS is currently the most famous boy group in the world. BTS is definitely a huge pride of Korea. It is hard to estimate how much their existence alone has contributed to the national interest. If so, there are many ways to honor BTS’s achievements at the government level. Why is it always the exemption of military service, which is a duty to everyone?

People with authority should think about improving the military environment so that BTS will be willing to enlist before thinking of not sending them there.
