Korean Football Team Coach Klinsmann Repeats The Trick Of Hinting At Resignation Before Getting Fired

Coach Klinsmann of the Korean national football team hinted at his resignation on SNS to avoid further criticism

On February 16th, Klinsmann posted a photo of him standing in a circle with the players of the Korean national team during training. In the caption, he said, “To all players, my coaching staff and all Korean football fans with sincere gratitude! Thank you so much for all your support taking us to the semi-final of the Asian Cup and an incredible journey over the last 12 months with not losing 13 games in a row before the semi-final! Keep on fighting”.

In one way, it can be a letter of appreciation dedicated to the players, other coaches and Korean fans. However, considering the current situation that Klinsmann is facing, it can also have another meaning. This may be his farewell message to the Korean football team and Korean football fans, or a resignation letter.

Klinsmann

The reason is that he made this post just a few hours before the Korean Football Association announced their decision to fire him. Earlier on the same day, KFS held an emergency meeting on the issues related to the national football team at the Football Center in Shinmun-ro, Seoul with all executives, including KFA Chairman Jung Mong-kyu. The private meeting reportedly discussed whether to fire Klinsmann or not.

On the previous day, the Power Reinforcement Committee had already come up with the conclusion that Klinsmann should be replaced, however, they did not have the authority to decide on the issue so they needed to have a meeting with Chairman Jung. At the moment, coach Klinsmann will likely be replaced. KFA stated that they would officially announce the decision at the meeting. KFA Chairman Jung will be the presenter and stand in front of the public to announce it by himself.

Therefore, it is understandable that coach Klinsmann noticed the opinions against him so he took a step early and expressed his desire to resign. Klinsmann had shown this behavior once in the past. After becoming the coach of Hertha BSC in November 2019, he continued to show an insincere attitude so he faced a backlash from the team’s fans when announcing his resignation through SNS three months after taking over the team without consulting with the club. Klinsmann called it a “mistake” after he was appointed as the coach of the Korean national team, but his repeated actions can no longer be considered a “mistake”. It’s indeed a bad habit.
