“King the Land” couldn’t surpass “Agency”, became 7th highest-rated drama in JTBC’s history

JTBC’s drama “King the Land” came to an end. It ended with its own highest ratings, but did not achieve results as expected.

King the Land“, which ended on August 6th, had a happy ending. Cheon Sa Rang (Im Yoon Ah) quit her job at King Hotel and made a hotel of her own, while Goo Won (Lee Jun Ho) succeeded in growing King Hotel into a global hotel. The two, who each achieved their dreams, held a wedding ceremony and became a married couple.

The surrounding characters also suddenly had happy endings. Kang Da Eul (Kim Ga Eun), who was suffering from her immature husband and thoughtless in-laws, ended her narrative in such a hurry that her husband came to his senses. Goo Hwa Ran (Kim Seon Young), Goo Won’s older half-sister who had been like Goo Won’s enemy all her life, shed tears of regret with Goo Won’s words and her son’s hug. And even when she saw Goo Won’s biological mother at the wedding hall, she showed polite manners. It is too sudden to complete each person’s dream and happiness.

“King the Land” was criticized for its childish setting and poor directing skills from the beginning of its airing. Nevertheless, the rise in ratings was possible because Lee Jun Ho and Im Yoon Ah’s romance synergy made up for the missing parts. But this, too, reached its limit. The rise in ratings was dampened after the two began dating in earnest.

The kiss scenes between the two, which continued in each episode, rather broke viewers’ immersion level. The fun was halved as various episodes disappeared and only the scenes that seemed to have been seen were repeated. The typical Cinderella story and cliché setting remained.

The highest rating of “King the Land” is 13.8%. It failed its promise of ranking first among this year’s JTBC dramas. The first place is still 18.5% of “Doctor Cha”. It ranked third among this year’s JTBC dramas after “Agency” starring Lee Bo Young. It became the 7th highest-rated drama in JTBC’s history, following “The World of the Married”, “Reborn Rich”, “SKY Castle”, “Doctor Cha”, “Itaewon Class” and “Agency”.

It is doubtful whether “King the Land” deserved a 13% rating in terms of work quality alone. However, it is clear that it was a childish yet addictive drama to watch. This was proven by topicality.

Im Yoon Ah and Lee Jun Ho became two box office stars with “King the Land”. Im Yoon Ah reached a more spectacular heyday as an actress than ever, being active from movies to dramas. Lee Jun Ho also established himself as a talented actor by succeeding in “The Red Sleeve” and “King the Land”. “King the Land” is likely to be remembered as a work that reaffirmed the influence of the two.
