On September 30, attorney Go Sang Rok of the law firm Pil, representing Kim Soo Hyun, stated that the actor had a real relationship with someone else from 2016 to spring 2019. According to Go, after enlisting in October 2017, Kim served at the DMZ front-line unit until July 2019. During that time, he regularly called his girlfriend and filled over 150 diary-style letters with his feelings for her. Instead of mailing them, he carried them out during leave and showed them to her directly, allowing her to write replies on the same pages.
Go emphasized the clear difference in tone between Kim’s letters to his actual partner and the casual notes he wrote to colleagues like Kim Sae Ron. The personal letters expressed explicit affection, with phrases like “I love you” and “I want to do everything with you.” One excerpt from April 6, 2018, read: “I kept reflecting on myself, what I did and what I failed to do… You are the one who makes even my clumsy words and actions meaningful. I really want to write your name, but I can’t. I love you.”
In contrast, the note disclosed by Kim Sae Ron’s side simply contained everyday reflections, weather updates, and military life anecdotes, which Go said were routine messages shared with fellow entertainers for comfort during isolation.
Excerpts from Kim’s diaries further confirmed his devotion to his girlfriend at the time:
July 30, 2018: “I’ll travel with her next year. There are still so many things we haven’t done yet, and I want to do them all together.”
August 3, 2018: “I may struggle every day in the unit, but I know I’m treating her better than before enlistment. I focus on her, wait for her, and I’m grateful every day that she’s waiting for me.”
Industry insiders also supported this, noting that Kim Soo Hyun’s three-year relationship with a fellow actress from his agency was widely known in entertainment circles, leaving no room for the possibility of overlapping with Kim Sae Ron.
Kim Soo Hyun’s legal team stressed that while releasing these personal writings was unavoidable to restore his reputation, they remain deeply private records that have been submitted unaltered to investigators. The controversy follows continued allegations by YouTube channel Garo Sero Institute, which Kim’s side has countered with legal action, arguing that supposed evidence—including recordings—was AI-fabricated.
