Actor Kim Soo Hyun has officially begun his legal counterattack following months of damaging rumors and accusations surrounding his past relationship with the late actress Kim Sae Ron. Public sentiment, once overwhelmingly negative, may now shift as Kim’s legal team directly confronts the allegations.
On October 27, lawyer Go Sang Rok, representing Kim Soo Hyun, uploaded a video titled “Official Statement on the Garo Sero Institute Case: Fabricated Evidence and Distorted Truths” on his YouTube channel. In the video, he dismantled the claims made by Kim Se Ui, head of the controversial YouTube channel Garo Sero Institute, as well as statements by Kim Sae Ron’s bereaved family.
Go argued that the scandal was sparked by a false statement allegedly left behind by Kim Sae Ron, which Kim Se Ui then used to make baseless accusations. One major point of contention was the misuse of adult-era photos—presented as if they were from when Kim Sae Ron was still a minor—to create the impression of an underage relationship. “Kim Se Ui claimed he had thousands of photos but has not produced even one,” Go noted.
He demanded clarification on how the opposing side concluded that Kim Soo Hyun was the person behind alleged KakaoTalk conversations from June 2016 and April 13, 2018. Go also claimed that Kim’s military letters to a then-girlfriend had been deceptively displayed alongside unrelated adult-era postcards to mislead viewers.
“They fabricated the sender of the messages and presented adult photos as if they were taken during her minor years. These were conscious manipulations done for profit, despite knowing they were false,” Go stated.
He added that during the time of the alleged conversations, Kim Soo Hyun was busy filming the movie Real and could not have been involved. Go accused Kim Se Ui of altering names and profile pictures in chat screenshots to make them appear as if they came directly from Kim Soo Hyun, which were then used in broadcasts and press conferences.
“This false information was picked up by international outlets and spread globally. It’s not just defamation—it’s a brutal form of character assassination and a national scam,” Go emphasized.
He concluded by expressing hope that Kim Soo Hyun can reclaim his reputation and return to his career, insisting that “the truth must come out.”
Previously, reinforcing the claim that Kim Soo Hyun never dated Kim Sae Ron as a minor. Kim Soo Hyun’s agency maintains that their relationship began only after Kim Sae Ron reached adulthood, between the summer of 2019 and fall of 2020.
The accusations first surfaced in March when Kim Sae Ron’s family, via Garo Sero Institute, claimed that Kim Soo Hyun had dated Kim Sae Ron since she was in middle school. Despite the agency’s clarification, public opinion quickly turned hostile. Kim Soo Hyun halted all activities and was hit with compensation claims from brands he had endorsed.
With the release of evidence and firm legal rebuttals, Kim Soo Hyun’s team is working to clear his name. Whether this will be enough to shift the cold tide of public opinion remains to be seen.
