The Locarno International Film Festival released an interview with Kim Min-hee, the winner of Pardo for Best Performance, on its official account on the 19th.
Kim Min-hee said, “Actually, I didn’t have high expectations. I really like this film, and it made me happiest that I won this award for this work. I love this film and think it’s beautiful, so I believe this award is for the film. I kept wondering if there could be something this exciting and fun for someone my age. It seems that energy went directly into the character.”
She added, “I felt how much I love the character and how much joy the filming location brings me.”
Hong Sang-soo’s 32nd new work, Suyoocheon, is Kim Min-hee’s 15th collaboration with the director. The film depicts a scandal occurring at a women’s university during a drama sketch festival. The cast includes Kim Min-hee, Kwon Hae-hyo, Jo Yoon-hee, and Ha Seong-guk.
The story revolves around a university lecturer who asks her uncle, who has been unable to find work for years, to direct a play. The film will be released domestically on September 18.
Kim Min-hee described Suyoocheon, saying, “When I watched the film as an audience member, there were aspects that were too beautiful and strangely touched my heart, which is hard to explain with words. I want to express that it is very mysterious and beautiful. I think the small, varied, and complex things happening in people’s relationships are really necessary.”
She also noted, “The scenes of the changing moon in the sky were continuously filmed, and the contrast between what happens on the ground and in the sky was so beautiful. The audience’s reactions were very heart-warming. I was very happy with the blessings and comments like ‘The film is beautiful,’ ‘It was good,’ and ‘Thank you’ from the audience after the film ended. I want to continue showing good films to the audience.”
Meanwhile, Kim Min-hee won the Best Acting Award for Suyoocheon at the closing ceremony of the Locarno Film Festival. Her moment of leaning on the shoulder of director Hong Sang-soo, with whom she has had a romantic relationship, became a topic of interest. Director Hong filed for divorce from his wife in 2016, but the Seoul Family Court rejected the claim in 2019, citing that Hong was responsible for the breakdown of the marriage.
