Actress Kim Da-mi made another impressive performance through SBS’s Monday-Tuesday drama “Our Beloved Summer” (written by Lee Na-eun/ directed by Kim Yoon-jin), which ended on January 25th. “Our Beloved Summer” is a romance drama that tells about ex-lovers, who were supposed to end their relationship after saying, ‘I feel annoyed because we are together. Let’s not meet each other again’, but are then forcibly summoned in front of the camera after 10 years because the documentary they filmed in high school days goes viral again. The drama started with a rating of 3.2% (based on Nielson’s National Standard) and broke its own highest viewership peak of 5.3% for the final episode. “Our Beloved Summer” drew favorable reviews for the actors’ natural and realistic acting and high-quality emotional performances throughout 16 episodes.

In the drama, Kim Da-mi plays Kook Yeon-soo, a public relations expert who was the No.1 student in her school. She reunites with her ex-boyfriend Choi Woong, who ranked the last place in school, after such a long time. Facing financial problems, Kook Yeon-soo developed a realistic aspect that she always prioritizes success. But when she met Choi Woong again when they turned 29, she felt excited and eventually started a romance with him once again. Kook Yeon-soo’s image was drawn perfectly and realistically with Kim Da-mi’s natural acting skills, and this drama became another impressive work in her acting career after movie “The Witch” and JTBC’s drama “Itaewon Class”.

Kim Da-mi

Ever since her debut, Kim Da-mi has swept various awards, especially the Best New Actress Awards with representative works, such as “The Witch” and “Itaewon Class”, and become an actress that received keen attention from the public. At the press conference held before the official broadcast of “Our Beloved Summer”, she said, “I used to play strong characters in previous works, so I want to try a more realistic one in a rom-com”. Kim Da-mi has proved her solid acting skills by showing a wide spectrum and potential for “rom-com dramas” acting through “Our Beloved Summer”. Through a video interview with Kim Da-mi, many stories, including how “Our Beloved Summer” means to her and her chemistry with Choi Woo-sik when reuniting 3 years after “The Witch”, were revealed.

  • Chemistry with Choi Woo-sik?

▶ It’s been 3 years since “The Witch”, and I didn’t expect to meet him with this character. When filming “The Witch”, I already thought that I wanted to act with him again. I thought it would be great to portray any character freely. While filming for the drama this time, I felt so comfortable because I already knew him. I remembered that we didn’t even need time to get to know each other at the beginning of the filming because we were already close to each other. I relied on him a lot.

  •  Meeting again after 3 years, did you two realize how you have grown?

▶ There were not many scenes in which we shared talks back then. Watching him acting freely at the filming set, I thought he was such an amazing actor. 3 years have passed, and we have grown a lot, so when we met again, I felt something familiar but different at the same time. He still shows great performances like back then, but he has become much cooler, and there are many things I want to learn from him. The atmosphere at the filming set was really comfortable because he always appeared exactly like his character Woong. I can feel that we could understand each other well without saying anything. In fact, I couldn’t feel the realistic emotions while filming “The Witch”. My perspective was narrow because I was only wondering about how to portray my character well. Facing a bigger scene, I was very nervous and burdened. After experiencing more, I have become more comfortable with the filming set. I also realized that I had to broaden my horizon and not just stay with the narrow one. I learned how important it is to share talks and communicate with other actors. Unlike how I was back then, my mindset has changed and grown a lot.

  • How about your chemistry with Kim Sung-cheol and Roh Jung-eui?

▶ Sung-cheol oppa is very nice. He came to me and ask this and that even though it was our first time meeting each other. He likes playing jokes a lot, but becomes serious when it comes to acting. He always walked around freely and warmed up the atmosphere at the filming site. I had so much fun filming with him. I met Jung-eui 4 times during the filming. We didn’t meet as much as I thought. However, it was really interesting every time we met, so I thought it would have been great if we had had more scenes together. I want to meet her again in another work.”

  • Synchronization rate with Kook Yeon-soo?.

▶ It is about 60-70%. It is similar in that he does not reveal his inner feelings well. He doesn’t seem to talk much about difficult things. I’m in a different situation, but soft water has a lot of thorns. I think Jiwoong and Woongi mixed soft water. (laugh)

  • How do you feel about wearing a school uniform in your 20s?

▶ Acting is the only thing that makes me able to wear a school uniform in my 20s, but I think it’s also an enjoyable experience for me. I don’t know how long I’ll be able to wear it, but I think I want to wear the school uniform as much as possible and act on those days.

  • Did you have any difficulties while acting at the same time as you were in high school and at the present time?

▶ I though a lot about how to express the feelings of Yeon-soo. I tried to portray this character as she seems to keep a lot of worries to herself and doesn’t want to let her emotions be shown on the outside. In order to show the growth of Kook Yeon-soo, I acted thinking about when she would open up her heart.

  • A heart-fluttering scene.

▶ It felt different from the script when Woong said, “We didn’t just love like that.” In fact, it felt like my heart was pounding. It was a scene where I felt excited and sad that the moment Woong first spoke out, and it was so cool.

  • Did you sympathize with Kook Yeon-soo’s decision to break up with Choi Woong because of poverty and reality?

▶ Maybe because I’m playing Yeon-soo, I can relate to her. If it were Yeon-soo, I would, and I understand because I think I wouldn’t want to burden the one I love.

  • It was impressive that there was always someone next to you and you expressed your desire to live your life that improved for the first time, but was there a moment when you actually felt that Kim Da-mi’s life was pretty good?

▶ When I think about it, I am so grateful to my friends and family who have always been next to me. Before that, I was too busy and couldn’t look around much like Yeon-soo, but when I went home after work, I felt very grateful when I had a family and friends who waited for me like this.

  • Does actor Kim Da-mi often say “what if?”

▶ I don’t do a lot. I think I think a lot by myself.

  • Do you notice anything about the appearance of the character Kook Yeon-soo?

▶ Since Yeon-soo had to show 10 years of time, she changed her hairstyle a lot when she was a student, college student, and at the company. Since she was given the title of team leader at a young age, she tried to wear it casually. Style is a big part of what we all talked about together.

  • Did Yeon-soo not know that Ji-woong has a crush on her?

▶ Ìn fact, I worried a lot about that part. I wondered, “Did she really not know?”, but then I acted like she knew nothing about the issue. I think that feeling appears when Ji-woong meets Yeon-soo more often when they have become adults. Yeon-soo is the kind of person who would notice this, but I tried to act as if she didn’t pay attention to that point.

  • The chemistry with actor Park Jin-joo?

▶ We met for the first time in this work, and it was so fun that I laughed and cried while filming it. (Laughs) I brought a lot of ideas and funny situations, so I smiled just looking at her face. Thanks to my sister, I was able to give you a lot of laughs.

  • If it’s Kim Da-mi, not Guk Yeon-soo, who is more attractive, Choi Woong or Kim Ji-woong?

▶I will choose Choi Woong. Is it because I am Yeon-soo? Woongie only looks at one person and doesn’t express much, but only looks at Yeon-soo and does her best for Yeon-soo, it’s cool. I think Ji-woong is the same, but I want to choose Woongie because I have been Yeon-soo. (laugh)

  • Actual dating style and ideal type?

▶ It changes a lot depending on the other party. I don’t have an ideal type, but I think it’s good if we can communicate well.

  • The teamwork with director Kim Yoon-jin?

▶ I actually worked as a friend. Although he is a director, he talks too well, talks a lot about this and that, while filming and talking a lot. He didn’t want to miss anything. When directing, he didn’t use the walkie-talkie but went to the side talking about this and that to create the character.

  • If you imagine Woong and Yeon-soo’s couple life

▶ It seems so funny. I feel like we are going to be arguing and fighting, and I feel like we are going to live in extremes. (laugh)
