Scheduled to premiere in November, “Goryeo-Khitan War” is a new historical drama from KBS 2TV and part of KBS’ 50th-anniversary special project. It deals with the second and third periods of the Goryeo-Khitan War. King Hyeonjong of Goryeo and his political teacher, Commander-in-Chief Gang Gam Chan, unite the people of Goryeo and lead a war against Khitan.
The recently unveiled poster for the drama is truly striking. The poster features King Hyeonjong (played by Kim Dong Jun) sitting on a rocky path in the dimly lit early morning, gazing at the ruins of Gaegyeong Palace. The contrast between Gaegyeong Palace covered in thick fog and Hyeonjong, who is dressed in royal attire, adds to the intrigue about his future destiny.
Some viewers commented that they initially thought it was an OTT production just by looking at the poster and expressed surprise at the quality. Popular OTT platforms in Korea include Netflix, TVING, Wavve, Coupang Play and Disney+. Among them, Netflix has produced high-budget series like “Kingdom”, offering users more diverse content. The ability to use more stimulating and diverse materials compared to terrestrial dramas has been seen as a strength of OTT platforms.
This has led to some discussions about the difference in quality between terrestrial and OTT productions. However, “Goryeo-Khitan War” captured the attention of prospective viewers with its majestic scale from the poster alone.
Furthermore, “Goryeo-Khitan War” marks the return of actor Choi Soo Jong to historical dramas after a decade. Generating excitement on various fronts, the drama is set to premiere in November.
