The rating of KBS2’s “Curtain Call” rose slightly but fell again as soon as SBS’s “Trolley” and tvN’s “Missing 2” joined the Monday-Tuesday drama competition.
On December 19th, “Trolley” and “Missing 2” were unveiled at 10 p.m. and 8:50 p.m., respectively. The follow-up series of “Cheer Up” – “Trolley” tells the story that begins when the secret of Kim Hye Joo (Kim Hyun Joo), the wife of Nam Ju Do (Park Hee Sun), a politician who lived quietly hiding his past, was revealed to the world, forcing the couple to face dilemma and choices.
Kim Hyun Joo and Park Hee Sun, who returned to SBS for the first time in 7 years and 9 years, respectively, played the main characters and proved their solid acting skills. In addition, new actress Jung Soo Bin drew attention as she replaced Kim Sae Ron, who dropped out of the cast due to her drunk driving incident.
The first episode of “Trolley” depicts the story of Kim Hye Joo and Nam Joo Do couple facing a crisis. A series of events and accidents, such as the sudden disappearance of their daughter in the middle of the night, the death of their son, and the appearance of an uninvited guest, caused cracks to occur in their peaceful daily lives and relationship.
According to rating reports, “Trolley” recorded 4.6% (nationwide), the same as that of “Curtain Call”, which dropped 1.5% from the record of 6.1% in the previous episode. “Curtain Call” achieved 7.2% in the first broadcast and remained in the 4% range after falling to 3% in episode 2. Its rating performance improved a little bit since episode 9 but collapsed helplessly due to the attack of new dramas. This proved that the rise in the viewer rating of “Curtain Call” was not due to viewers’ interest in the work, but because there were no competing dramas.
However, “Trolley” has not performed well enough to feel relieved. The drama announced a safe start but in order to continue this positive trend, it has to reveal its own charms. Viewers were thrilled by the series of accidents, but Kim Hye Joo’s suspicious actions were not clearly explained. If this kind of development continues, the audience may easily feel bored.
In addition, it is also important to show how Jung Soo Bin, who made an impactful appearance at the end of episode 1, will act alongside Kim Hyun Joo and Park Hee Sun. Jung Soo Bin is arousing keen interest due to Kim Sae Ron’s incident, so it is necessary for her to overcome the burden and show off her stable acting abilities.
“Missing 2”, which was introduced on the same day, made a smooth first step by recording a nationwide viewer rating of 3.7% in episode 1. Two years ago, “Missing” started with a 1% rating but rose to peak at 4.8% later on. Therefore, expectations are high on whether “Missing 2”, which changed its broadcaster from OCN to tvN, will be able to rise again through word of mouth.
The Monday-Tuesday drama competition for the No.1 spot is still ongoing. After “Curtain Call” ends, new series “Brain Cooperation”, starring Jung Yong Hwa and Cha Tae Hyun, will take over the baton. Attention is focused on whether Monday-Tuesday dramas, which have formed a lineup of different genres, including mystery romance, fantasy, and even comic, will be able to make a breakthrough from the current sluggish performance in ratings.
