“I never thought a song could be demonized like this.” Singer Julaiti (居來提) broke his silence on October 27, issuing a public response to growing accusations linking him to the tragic death of Chinese actor Yu Menglong
Yu Menglong’s untimely passing in September after a fatal fall shocked the Chinese entertainment industry. Shortly afterward, Julaiti released a heartfelt tribute song titled “Are You Listening?”, a ballad that moved many fans, especially during his emotional live performance. In the performance, Julaiti even recited an acrostic poem spelling “There are too many bad people”, sparking widespread speculation about potential foul play.

However, recent online chatter uncovered Julaiti’s past collaboration with actor Fan Shiqi, the man now controversially linked by netizens to Yu Menglong’s death. The two were previously part of the pop duo JF BROS, a detail that fueled conspiracy theories about Julaiti’s prior knowledge of the incident or possible involvement.
In a strongly worded Weibo post, Julaiti addressed the rumors directly: “The song was written for my best friend. I never expected it to be twisted into something so sinister.” He explained the tribute was composed after Yu’s passing as a way to honor their 12-year friendship, and he firmly rejected any claims of premeditation or collusion.

Despite his mourning, Julaiti now finds himself entangled in a web of internet speculation. The backlash highlights the darker side of celebrity grief, where genuine sorrow can be misread as performance, and past associations become ammunition for unfounded allegations.
During a concert in late September, Julaiti dedicated “Are You Listening?” to Yu Menglong, describing him as “a good brother who has gone to a more beautiful world” and “the pride of Xinjiang”, noting Yu’s participation in last year’s CCTV Spring Festival Gala on behalf of their hometown.

The case remains surrounded by mystery and unconfirmed claims, with netizens and media continuing to search for answers. As of now, no official investigation has implicated Julaiti or Fan Shiqi, but the incident underscores how quickly online speculation can spiral into public accusation even amid mourning.
Yu Menglong’s name, once associated with warmth and talent, now echoes in a tragic narrative overshadowed by suspicion and internet drama. Yet, Julaiti’s final wish remains unchanged: “Please remember his name.”
