A video titled “Are You Drunk? Joo Hyun Young: Yeah!” was recently uploaded to Joo Hyun Young’s YouTube channel. In the video, the actress shared a meal with staff members after their first filming session and casually chatted with them.
During the conversation, they played a balance game that asked participants to choose between two difficult scenarios: being criticized for playing villain roles for life or being underestimated forever for playing foolish characters. Joo Hyun Young chose the latter.

She explained, “If you play a fool, people might underestimate you for the rest of your life, but at least someone would still take care of you.” Her answer led her to recall a painful period when she struggled with hateful comments online.
Joo Hyun Young said that if she had been asked the question before filming the drama Ms. Incognito, she might have chosen the villain role instead. At the time, she believed she was playing a typical antagonist, but the character later turned out to have a more human and unexpected side.

However, when the story initially portrayed her character as someone who harms the protagonist, the actress became the target of intense criticism online. According to her, hateful messages flooded comment sections, with many viewers directing insults not only at the character but also at her personally.
She recalled seeing comments telling her to “die,” which left a lasting emotional impact. “When I saw those messages, I felt emotionally shaken without even realizing it,” she admitted. “Even the next day and the day after that, when I was on my way to the radio station for work, my heart felt heavy, like there was a stone sitting inside it.”

The experience made her reflect deeply on the reality of acting. Joo Hyun Young confessed that it was the first time she realized that even if the criticism came from playing a role, the personal impact could still be painful.
“I thought, ‘Even if it’s acting, I can’t live my whole life being cursed at like this,’” she said. “Of course, part of me also thought maybe it meant I acted well. But the emotional blow I felt as a person was so strong that I couldn’t simply ignore it.”
