Jo Hyun-young, a member of the girl group Rainbow, got real about her past romance with singer Alex during the August 19 episode of SBS’s Dolsing Fourmen. Her unexpected honesty touched a nerve with viewers, especially as she revealed how her public relationship nearly derailed her career.
The episode featured guests Bae Jung-nam, Go Woori, Jo Hyun-young, and Kim Kyu-won. Things took a personal turn when Jo playfully scolded fellow guest Go Woori, saying, “(She) keeps revealing my past public relationship without consulting me. It’s been so long that some people don’t even remember, but she keeps bringing it up.”
Go Woori defended her comment, explaining, “Someone asked how Jo and I became friends, and I said, ‘We all used to hang out with that oppa.’ I’m still close with him and listen to his radio show.”
While Alex wasn’t mentioned by name, netizens were quick to connect the dots. Jo confirmed their relationship back in October 2015, and they quietly parted ways in February 2017.
When asked by Tak Jae-hoon if she was the one dumped, Jo clarified, “No, it was all good memories.” Go Woori added, “If it had ended badly, we wouldn’t be able to talk about it like this.”

Yet Jo Hyun-young didn’t sugarcoat the aftermath. “My popularity was rising at the time. Just when things looked promising, the dating rumors came out. I really think my career crashed because of it,” she admitted. “We broke up on good terms, but I’ve decided I’ll never have a public relationship again.”
Her candid words shed light on the harsh reality many idols face—where a single relationship can spark backlash and derail a once-burgeoning career.
