The first teaser for Genie, Make A Wish, starring Kim Woo-bin and Suzy, has been released but quickly stirred mixed reactions from viewers.

The 46-second clip shows Suzy as Ga-young, holding a magic lamp in the middle of a desert. From behind, Kim Woo-bin’s genie character emerges and later transforms grains of golden sand into the series’ title. However, instead of building anticipation, the teaser was widely criticized for resembling a commercial.

Some harsh comments included: “It looks like a cheap edit”, “Is this a fried chicken ad?”, while others felt the visuals lacked the grandeur expected from a fantasy drama.

The teaser also fueled controversy with the genie’s line: “I will travel across the world to find you. Remember, my name is Iblis. I will find you.” In Islam, Iblis represents the devil, leading many to argue that the drama was inappropriately romanticizing an evil figure.

One viewer commented: “Iblis is not something to joke about. This is serious and shouldn’t be part of a romance drama.” Another added: “Are they asking us to fall for a character that symbolizes the devil?”

Still, some fans expressed excitement, especially as the drama marks Kim Woo-bin and Suzy’s reunion since Uncontrollably Fond (2016).

According to Sports Kyunghyang, Genie, Make A Wish follows a genie who awakens after a thousand years of confinement and meets Ga-young, to whom he grants three wishes. The drama is set to premiere on October 3rd.
