Jeon Somi taxi controversy Japan

On January 27, Jeon Somi shared casual snapshots on her SNS with the caption “One random day,” showing a glimpse of her daily life.

In one photo, Jeon Somi is seated inside a taxi in Japan, leaning back comfortably with her legs raised onto the seat—shoes still on—striking a relaxed, trendy pose. While the image conveyed a free-spirited and “hip” vibe, controversy quickly followed once viewers realized the setting was the interior of a Japanese taxi.

Japan is widely known for its strict standards regarding manners on public transportation and in commercial vehicles. Against that cultural backdrop, placing shoe-clad feet on taxi seats was criticized by some as disrespectful behavior. As a result, online reactions grew heated, with comments such as “this goes beyond being hip,” “public etiquette shouldn’t be taken so lightly,” and “as a global star active in Japan, she should have been more careful.”

Many critics emphasized that taxis are not private spaces but shared commercial environments, arguing that basic courtesy should be upheld regardless of personal style. Some also noted that the behavior might appear uncomfortable even in Korea, and could be perceived as even more problematic in Japan, where social norms around cleanliness and respect are particularly strong.

On the other hand, there has also been a wave of defense. Supporters argued that judging someone harshly over a single photo is excessive, suggesting the vehicle could have been a chartered car or part of a filming setup. Others felt that the image aligned with Jeon Somi’s signature carefree concept and fashion-forward image, and that interpreting it as intentional disrespect was unfair.

Nevertheless, the debate continues, highlighting how even small actions by globally influential celebrities can be magnified and scrutinized through cultural lenses. The discussion has evolved into a broader conversation about where the line should be drawn between artistic expression, personal freedom, and public manners.

Born in 2001, Jeon Somi released her second mini album Chaotic & Confused in August last year, promoting the title track “Closer.” She is also set to make her official acting debut in the upcoming thriller film Perfect Girl, a global K-pop–themed project co-starring Adeline Rudolph and Arden Cho.
