While Jisoo’s drama “Snowdrop” is being criticized intensely, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa’s supportive messages for Jisoo draw attention
Despite JTBC’s drama “Snowdrop” being criticized by netizens for beautifying the National Security Planning Agency, Jisoo’s group members – Jennie, Rosé and Lisa posted photos of the broadcast and cheered for Jisoo.
On December 18th, BLACKPINK Rosé and Lisa showed their support for Jisoo by posting photos, proving that they were watching the live broadcast of “Snowdrop”. Earlier, Rosé and Jennie uploaded Jisoo’s photos, which were taken at “Snowdrop” press conference, and added supportive messages, such as “Our sister is so pretty. Snowdrop, let’s make a big hit!”, “I’m looking forward to seeing Youngro”.
Internet users on the online community theqoo commented on BLACKPINK’s cheering posts for Jisoo, saying, “This is so disappointing”, “I can’t believe they used their influence like this”, “I did like them but…” On the other hand, many people raised opposite opinions, saying “Why do people only curse Jisoo and BLACKPINK, what about other actors?”, “Jisoo doesn’t do this drama alone. Don’t curse only her.”
Set in Seoul 1987, “Snowdrop” tells the love story of Im Su-ho, a spy who jumped into a women’s university dormitory while being wounded, and a college student Youngro, who hides Suho and takes care of him. However, after the synopsis was revealed, various controversies over disparaging the democratization movement and beautifying the Agency of National Security Planning arose. In addition, people also raised questions wondered whether “Youngcho”, which is Jisoo’s role – Youngro in the original work, might have been inspired by Chun Young-cho, who resisted Park Chung-hee’s regime in the 1970s.
Regarding the controversies, “the production team of “Snowdrop” explained, “The background of the main incident in this drama is not the democratization movement, but the 1987 presidential election. It is a hypothetical story of the military regime and the National Security Planning Agency conspiring with the North Korean dictatorship to maintain vested rights”. However, netizens poured out criticisms for this drama even more after the airing of episode 1 in December 18th.
In the meantime, “Snowdrop” production team is avoiding communication with netizens by turning the Naver’s real-time chat and other viewers’ bulletin boards into private sections without giving any explanation.
