Japanese police have arrested a 75-year-old woman in Ibaraki Prefecture after she confessed to hiding her daughter’s body in a freezer for two decades, a case that has shocked the public and drawn widespread media attention.
According to authorities, on September 24, Keiko Mori went to the police station with a relative and admitted to concealing her daughter’s remains. Investigators later discovered the body of an adult woman inside a large freezer at Mori’s home. The freezer measured 95 cm in length, 85 cm in width, and 60 cm in height.

The deceased is believed to be Makiko, Mori’s daughter, born in 1975. If alive today, she would be 50 years old. Police confirmed that the body was already in an advanced stage of decomposition. At the time of discovery, the woman was dressed in a T-shirt and underwear, found in a kneeling position with her head bent forward inside the freezer.
Mori told police she purchased the freezer to contain the odor spreading through the house after her daughter’s death. She has been arrested on suspicion of the unlawful disposal of a body.

Authorities revealed that Mori had other children but did not disclose details about them or their testimonies. Family members only discovered Makiko’s body when they gathered at Mori’s home following the recent death of her husband earlier this month.
The unusual and tragic nature of the case has drawn significant domestic and international attention. Police are continuing their investigation to clarify the exact circumstances surrounding the daughter’s death and the mother’s actions.
