Singer and actress IU has reportedly taken legal action against an anonymous online user accused of repeatedly spreading false information about her, including unfounded claims that she is Chinese rather than Korean.
According to reports, IU has requested that a U.S. court order Meta to disclose the identity of the individual behind the posts, marking another step in her ongoing efforts to combat online defamation.
The issue was discussed in a recent video uploaded by YouTube channel Entertainment President Lee Jin-ho, titled “Why Some Claim IU Is Chinese? The Truth Behind the Rumor.”
In the video, Lee Jin-ho claimed that IU filed a request with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, asking the court to compel Meta to provide identifying information about an anonymous user.
The reported request seeks details including the user’s: name, address, phone number, email address and IP address. The information would reportedly be used to identify the individual responsible for publishing defamatory posts online.
According to the report, the anonymous user allegedly posted 52 defamatory comments between March and October of last year. The posts reportedly included false allegations such as:
- Claiming IU writes Korean “like a foreigner.”
- Suggesting she is ethnically Chinese.
- Claiming unusually large numbers of Chinese fans attend her concerts.
- Accusing her of plagiarizing more than 50 songs.
The allegations have never been substantiated.
The report also traced the controversy back to an earlier conspiracy theory. According to Lee Jin-ho, rumors first circulated in 2023 after anonymous flyers containing baseless espionage claims about IU were distributed in a parking lot. The speculation intensified in December 2024 after IU prepaid meals and drinks for attendees near a public rally calling for the impeachment of then-President Yoon Suk Yeol. The charitable gesture was later used by some online users to spread political conspiracy theories and, eventually, false claims regarding her nationality.
There is no verified evidence supporting any of these allegations.
Separately, IU recently announced that she has postponed several major projects after her symptoms of patulous Eustachian tube worsened. The singer revealed that the condition had begun affecting her ability to maintain stable vocal performance, forcing her to delay both her September stadium concert and the release of her sixth full-length album.
Speaking to fans through her communication platform, IU apologized for postponing the concert. “I couldn’t keep my promise to perform at Goyang Stadium. I’m deeply sorry and heartbroken for disappointing my fans.” She is currently focusing on treatment and recovery before resuming promotional activities.
IU has consistently pursued legal action against individuals who spread malicious rumors or defamatory content online. The latest reported request to identify an anonymous commenter underscores her continued efforts to hold those responsible accountable through legal channels.
