IU said she asked the director to explain the line in “Broker” that expresses opposition to abortion because it was different from her own opinion

Singer-actress IU revealed her thoughts on the movie “Broker”, which raises discussions on the fetuses’ right to live and women’s self-determination right.

IU met with reporters in Cannes, France on May 27th (local time) and expressed her thoughts on the movie “Broker” in which she stars. “Broker” is a film that tells an unexpected and special journey of people who are associated with baby boxes. In this movie, IU takes on the role of So-young, a single mother.

IU plays So-young and tells stories about different issues, including unplanned pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood. So-young, who sacrifices a certain part of her life for her child, sometimes confronts detective Soo-jin (Bae Doo-na) over abortion and opinions related to it.

In “Broker”, when Soo-jin said, “Why did you give birth to the child if you weren’t going to take responsibility for him?”, So-young asked back, “Is killing a baby before his birth a lighter crime than throwing him away after birth?” This line is interpreted as So-young’s opposition to abortion.

In this regard, IU shared, “After reading that line, I met director Kore-eda separately and asked him about it”, adding, “I asked the director if that was So-young’s individual value or he was just using the character So-young to deliver his own idea.”

IU, who wondered whether the line was just a character’s opinion or the theme of the movie, explained that the reason she asked the director that question was that it was different from her own value and belief. IU then said, “If that line was the theme of this movie, it would be a little hard for me to do it so I had to ask him to make sure about the exact idea before began the filming”, adding, “My opinion was different from So-young’s”.
