Once regarded as one of Hong Kong's most celebrated screen beauties in the 1990s, actress Hung Yan captivated audiences with her sweet, elegant appearance. However, while her career flourished, her personal life was marked by heartbreak, failed relationships, and public betrayals.
A celebrated actress with an unfortunate love life

Born in 1971, Hung Yan grew up in a financially struggling family after losing her father at a young age. Her mother worked tirelessly to raise four children on a modest income. Her life changed dramatically when she was discovered by director Chan Kin-Hing at the age of 18 and introduced to the entertainment industry.
With her large expressive eyes and graceful beauty, Hung quickly became one of Hong Kong’s rising stars. Alongside Ada Choi, Monica Chan, and Athena Chu, she was recognized as one of the industry’s most beloved actresses of the 1990s.

She went on to star in numerous popular television dramas, including The Legendary Ranger, Beauty World, and My Bratty Princess, earning widespread recognition for both her beauty and acting talent.
At the height of her fame, acclaimed writer Ni Kuang famously praised her appearance, saying that Hung Yan possessed “a beauty that is unforgettable after just one glance.”
Despite her success on screen, her romantic life was far less fortunate. In her early twenties, she married businessman Wong Kwok-leung after knowing him for only one month. The marriage ended quickly without children.

Following the divorce, Hung fell in love with actor Max Mok after they worked together on a television drama. However, just as she discovered she was pregnant, Mok reportedly ended the relationship. Determined to keep her child, Hung chose to become a single mother and raised her son on her own.
The emotional setback eventually prompted her to leave Hong Kong and relocate to mainland China with her son. For years, she supported and raised him without receiving financial assistance from her former partner.
Betrayed twice by her younger husband
While building her career in mainland China, Hung met actor Zhang Danfeng, who is ten years younger than her. At the time, she was already an established star, while Zhang was still trying to make a name for himself. Despite the age difference and the fact that Hung already had a son, Zhang pursued her sincerely and eventually won her heart.

The couple married in 2009 and later welcomed a daughter together. After their wedding, Hung entrusted her husband with managing her assets, and her son even adopted Zhang’s surname. Their family was widely viewed as one of the entertainment industry’s happiest marriages.
That image collapsed when Zhang became embroiled in an affair scandal involving his female assistant. The controversy shattered his reputation as the devoted husband many believed him to be.

Although many urged Hung to file for divorce, she initially chose to remain by his side. Reports later claimed that Zhang continued seeing the same woman despite the public scandal.
After allegedly discovering his infidelity for a second time, Hung finally decided to end their marriage in 2023. Since then, she has focused on raising her two children as a single mother once again.
Embracing single life in her mid-50s
Following years of emotional turmoil, Hung has chosen a quieter lifestyle centered on family and work. She has previously said that her greatest priorities today are maintaining emotional stability and ensuring the well-being of her children.

The actress has since established her own company and gradually returned to the entertainment industry. Now in her mid-50s, she continues to impress fans with her youthful appearance. Meanwhile, her son is studying at the Shanghai Theatre Academy and has begun appearing on television programs.
In rare comments about her past relationships, Hung admitted that she once believed wholeheartedly in love and stood by the choices she made despite public criticism. Over time, however, she says she has learned to accept life’s changes and face hardships with greater calm and resilience.
