Hong Sang-soo is marking a significant milestone in 2026, celebrating 30 years since his directorial debut a moment made even more notable by major developments in both his professional and personal life.
To commemorate the occasion, the Korean Film Archive will host a special retrospective titled “Hong Sang-soo Complete Retrospective: Introduction” at Cinematheque KOFA from May 2 to June 13.
The event will feature all 34 of his feature films, spanning from his 1996 debut The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well to his upcoming release The Day She Returns, set to premiere on May 6.

In a creative twist that reflects the director’s signature style, the screenings will be presented in two formats:
- Chronological order, tracing his evolution as a filmmaker
- Reverse order, offering audiences a fresh perspective on his body of work
Over three decades, Hong Sang-soo has maintained a remarkable pace, directing more than one film per year on average.
Known for his minimalist storytelling, improvisational dialogue, and recurring themes of relationships and self-reflection, he has built a distinct cinematic identity that continues to resonate on the international film festival circuit.
Adding to the celebratory moment, Hong Sang-soo’s 34th feature film, The Day She Returns, is set for release on May 6.

Beyond his professional achievements, Hong Sang-soo’s personal life has also drawn attention. The director and Kim Min-hee whose relationship has been widely discussed due to its controversial beginnings welcomed a son in April 2025.
With a landmark retrospective, a new film release, and a recent addition to his family, 2026 represents a rare convergence of career and personal milestones for Hong Sang-soo.
