HBO responds to rumor of Jennie’s debut drama “The Idol” making Season 2, “Nothing is decided”

Production company released their stance on rumors about the follow-up season of “The Idol”, which marked BLACKPINK Jennie’s acting debut.

On June 15th (local time), HBO posted on their official SNS account, saying “False information about the production team’s decision on the second season is spreading”, adding “No decision has been made yet. We will be back with a new episode this Sunday”.

Earlier, the gossip media outlet Page Six quoted a source, saying “The series was never intended for long-term airing and planned as a limited series (a short series airing for only one season)”. Quoting an HBO insider, they emphasized, “There is still a possibility for Season 2. However, no decision has yet to be made”, adding “The plan is going well at this point. Only two episodes have been released so far.”

Page Six reported that The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye), who participated in “The Idol” as a producer and the lead actor, will not be planning to make Season 2 due to the controversy over his bed scene with Lily Rose Depp.

Despite receiving harsh criticism for its excessively provocative content, “The Idol” surpassed 3.6 million viewers in the first airing week after releasing episode 1. According to HBO, this achievement surpasses the records of previous dramas, such as “The White Lotus” (3 million viewers) and “Euphoria” (3.3 million viewers).
