The controversy began when Jay Park mentioned British singer Dua Lipa during his performance at the “MIK Festival 2022”.

An audience at the festival did not hear exactly who Jay Park mentioned because of the surrounding noise at that time so they uploaded the video of that part on SNS. However, another overseas netizen – A shared the video and claimed, “Park Jae-beom made a disparaging remark about black people”.

As A’s claim spread through other SNS sites, Jay Park’s fans and other audiences at the festival refuted it by sending A messages, saying “I was at the festival and Park Jae-beom didn’t say such a thing”, “He said ‘Dua Lipa’. I heard it exactly”.

In response, A emphasized the freedom of expression and said, “That’s exactly what it sounded like to me. I don’t care about what you all are saying”, insisting that Park Jae-beom made a disparaging remark about black people. A then had an argument with Jay Park’s fans through messages.

Knowing the situation, Jay Park expressed his position on SNS to calm his fans, saying “I’m a big boy I can handle it”, and the controversy ended.

Seeing Jay Park’s message, saying “Hate on me but don’t hate on my fans”, fans reacted, “Park Jae-beom is the best”, “I’m so happy to be your fan”, “Don’t care about them, they’re just jealous of you”, “Please don’t feel hurt by malicious comments”, etc.
