Upcoming Chinese historical drama Gui Luan is becoming one of the most discussed projects on Chinese social media after its first trailer sparked widespread comparisons to Zhu Yu.
On Weibo, the topic “Is Gui Luan actually Zhu Yu 2.0?” quickly climbed trending discussion charts, with many viewers arguing that the atmosphere of the new drama feels strikingly similar to the earlier project.
Comments such as “The vibe is exactly like Zhu Yu,” “This is basically Zhu Yu 2.0,” and “Zhang Linghe is returning to another chaotic-era political drama” rapidly spread across online communities after the trailer’s release.

The comparisons largely stem from the fact that both dramas revolve around political conflict, turbulent historical settings, and male and female leads growing together amid large-scale power struggles. In addition, both projects are connected to author Duan Zi Lai Ji, while Zhang Linghe stars as the male lead in both productions, making the similarities even harder for audiences to ignore.
The production team behind Gui Luan later addressed the growing debate directly, firmly denying that the series is a sequel to Zhu Yu or an upgraded “2.0 version” as rumored online.
According to the producers, the two dramas only share the same author and lead actor, while their storylines, emotional core, character arcs, and world-building are entirely separate. Some original novel readers also pointed out that the familiar feeling likely comes from both stories using the classic underdog-rises-to-power trope during periods of political instability.
One of the most heavily discussed aspects is Zhang Linghe’s character image in both productions.

In Zhu Yu, the actor portrayed a restrained and emotionally heavy character with a cold, fate-driven aura. Meanwhile, his role as Xiao Li in Gui Luan is described as a more ambitious and rough-edged figure who rises from the lower class while openly pursuing power and influence.
Some viewers believe Zhu Yu focused more on restrained emotional tension within political intrigue, while Gui Luan appears to center on the rise of a heroic figure during chaotic times. Although both dramas belong to the historical political genre, many fans argue that their narrative direction and character development are fundamentally different.
The trailer’s visual style also fueled the comparisons. Cold color palettes, snowy landscapes, tense confrontations, and heavy emotional pressure were all noted by netizens as elements strongly reminiscent of Zhu Yu, helping the discussion gain even more traction online.
Still, many viewers currently see Gui Luan as a drama with a similar aesthetic rather than a direct copy of Zhu Yu. Fans believe the true differences in pacing, storytelling, and character depth can only be judged once the series officially premieres.
