On May 18, tvN’s You Quiz on the Block released a preview video through its official account titled, “The harsh reality check from Gong Seung Yeon’s mother that woke her up after seven years of trainee life and staying at home all day.”
In the clip, host Yoo Jae Suk asked, “I heard you joined SM after attending a gayageum competition and being chosen for your visuals. I’m curious who your fellow trainees were at the time.”
In response, Gong Seung Yeon shared, “Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, Red Velvet, and EXO were there.” She then honestly admitted, “Back then, I didn’t really have natural talent. I wasn’t good at dancing or singing. There were reasons why I couldn’t debut.”
The actress continued by recalling the uncertainty she faced after leaving the company without debuting.
“When I eventually left the company without debuting, I felt completely lost. I didn’t know how to start anything on my own,” she confessed.
Gong Seung Yeon also revealed that she spent a long time lying around at home after giving up on her idol dream. However, her mother’s blunt words became the turning point that pushed her to move forward.
“One day while I was just lying around at home, my mother suddenly said, ‘How long are you going to waste your life at home?’ That reality check really woke me up,” she said.
Following that moment, Gong Seung Yeon explained that she began actively searching for opportunities by reaching out to people she knew and sincerely asking them to help her audition.
The actress’s emotional and challenging debut story will be fully revealed on the upcoming episode of You Quiz on the Block, scheduled to air on May 20.
