Go Ah Sung appeared on the YouTube channel Yeouido Yuktwi Club in an episode of City Women’s Shelter, released on July 5, where she joined editor Kim Min Kyung and YouTuber Charles Enter for a discussion about their experiences as daughters.

During the conversation, Kim Min Kyung introduced a viewer’s story about a woman whose father had passed away. Because there were no male relatives available, a man she had once gone on a blind date with was reportedly listed as the chief mourner.

Charles Enter expressed disbelief, but Go Ah Sung responded that the situation was very real. “I’ve experienced it myself.”

The actress explained that her mother passed away in 2021, and because her father was absent and she has two sisters, there was no male immediate family member to fulfill the traditional role. “My mother passed away. I don’t have a father, and we’re three sisters. When my mom died, everything became chaotic because there was no one to be the chief mourner. There wasn’t a man.”

Go Ah Sung said the family initially turned to an uncle after being advised by people around them that a man should be seated as the chief mourner during the funeral. Although they were not particularly close to him, they followed the recommendation amid the confusion of organizing the funeral. “People kept telling us, ‘There has to be a man serving as the chief mourner.’ We thought that’s what we had to do, so we asked our uncle to sit in that position.”

However, the arrangement lasted only a day. “After one day, that was over. We eventually said, ‘It’s fine. We don’t need one.'”

In the end, Go Ah Sung revealed that she and her two sisters took responsibility for the funeral themselves. Her heartfelt account has drawn attention for highlighting the challenges some families still encounter due to longstanding funeral customs, particularly households without male family members.

While Korean funeral practices have gradually become more flexible in modern society, Go Ah Sung’s story has sparked conversations online about changing traditions and recognizing daughters’ equal roles in honoring and caring for their parents.
