From Henry Cavill sacked as Superman to Wonder Woman put on hold: Current chaotic situation of DC Universe

Things are changing for DC superheroes. DC’s drastic overhaul has sparked concerns among fans worldwide.

“We know we’re not going to make everyone happy at every stage,” said James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, about restructuring the superhero franchise.

In October, “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad” director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran were announced as the new co-CEOs of DC Studios, known as DC Films from Warner Bros. With this new leadership, there have been some drastic changes and announcements about the future of the franchise.

James Gunn tweeted on December 8th (local time), “It takes time to build a story for the next 10 years and we are still in the beginning stage. There will be an inevitable transition period as we begin to tell a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and games,”

He continued, “But in the end, the downside of the transition has been made smaller by the creative possibilities and the opportunities to correct what hasn’t worked in DC so far. We know we’re not going to make everyone happy at every stage, but we can promise that everything we do goes along the way.”

Prior to the new leadership, DC revealed several changes that have upset fans and filmmakers, including canceling the already-filmed “Batgirl” movie.

Gal Gadot’s next “Wonder Woman” movie is undecided

In early December, The Hollywood Reporter and multiple media outlets reported that Patty Jenkins’ script for “Wonder Woman 3” had been rejected, raising questions about the planned “Wonder Woman” trilogy’s progress.

In response to reports that several DC projects have been scrapped, James Gunn said honestly on Twitter, “Some of it is true, some of it is half true, some of it is not true, and some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.”

Gal Gadot, who was cast as Wonder Woman 9 years ago, recently reassured fans by saying on her SNS, “A few years ago it was announced that I was going to play Wonder Woman. I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character, and more than anything I’m grateful for the fans. I can’t wait to share her next chapter with you”

Patty Jenkins broke the silence and said, “I have never backed away from the project. I can consider whatever is required of me.”

Henry Cavill removed from “Superman franchise”

Henry Cavill debuted as Superman in “Man of Steel” in 2013 and later appeared in “Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice” (director Zack Snyder, 2016), “Justice League” (director Zack Snyder, 2017), “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (director Zack Snyder, 2021), and “Justice League Part 2” (director Zack Snyder).

Later on in October, Henry Cavill made a cameo in Dwane Johnson’s “Black Adam”. At the time, he informed fans via Instagram that he would be making a comeback as Superman and even said in an interview with Happy Sad Confused broadcast that “there is such a bright future ahead for the character”.

However, director James Gunn, who works on the new phase of DC’s superhero franchise, revealed on December 14th that the new “Superman” story will focus on an earlier part of the character’s life, so Henry Cavill will no longer make an appearance.

Henry Cavill himself calmly accepted the news, expressing that he “respect” the decision not to bring him back, and that everyone “can mourn for a bit”. At the same time, he also wished good luck and happiness to everyone involved in future projects.

Nevertheless, it seems that James Gunn is still open to collaborating with Henry Cavill, saying that he and Henry talked about “exciting possibilities to work together in the future”.

Ben Affleck may return

Ben Affleck will return as Batman in the forthcoming movie “The Flash”, and in “Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom”, which is scheduled to be released in December 2023. However, his future as the “cape crusader” beyond these two projects remains uncertain.

However, James Gunn replied to a fan, saying that he met with Ben yesterday “precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct”, but the right project needs to be found.

On the other hand, Robert Pattinson’s Batman will not be woven into the comprehensive DC universe.

The Flash

It was previously reported by Variety that DC is considering weaving Robert Pattinson’s version of Bruce Wayne into their superhero universe, but James Gun has since denied this news.

In addition, an additional movie for “Joker”, which stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga has begun filming and appears to remain separate from the Expanded Universe.
