“Extraordinary Attorney Woo” writer explains why Choi Soo Yeon ends up falling for Kwon Min Woo
An interesting behind-the-scenes anecdote has been shared by the writer of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”.
ENA’s drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” recently became a massive hit. Among the many positive reviews, the only thing in the development of the drama that irks viewers is the love line between Choi Soo Yeon (Ha Yoon Kyung) and Kwon Min Woo (Joo Jong Hyuk).
On September 1st, Cine21 published an interview with writer Moon Ji Won, who penned “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”.
Writer Moon Ji Won was also well aware that there were mixed reactions to the development of Choi Soo Yeon having feelings for Kwon Min Woo, who is labeled “Kwon Tactician” and considered a villain of the drama.
Writer Moon Ji Won explained why she added this love line in the story, saying, “If you look around you, there is often a flawless and perfect friend having a strangely absurd relationship. Soo Yeon’s positive side has been highlighted so much, so I put in scenes where her dating life is in vain, but I didn’t give it enough persuasion.”
Writer Moon Ji Won continued, “I should have been much more careful when there was a big change in the subplot. I believe there were many viewers who thought that the development was a ‘sudden curve’ because I didn’t have much experience as a writer yet.”
She even apologized to viewers, saying that she felt sorry towards them because she seemed to have disturbed their immersion in the story.
Writer Moon Ji Won also explained why the character Kwon Min Woo had a redemption. Opinions were divided among the viewers on this as well.
She said, “Actually, Kwon Min Woo hasn’t changed 180 degrees. Rather than a complete redemption, he acts a little differently from his attitude toward life so far. The change was just him supporting Young Woo, whom he initially viewed as a competitor.”
She added, “It is very difficult to make it convincing that Min Woo changes because he is influenced by Young Woo’s personality. Originally, people want to become better than before when they feel love. That’s why I tried to solve it by adding his love line with Soo Yeon, but I was criticized too much.”
Meanwhile, “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” aired its finale on August 18th. According to Nielsen Korea, the last episode of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” recorded viewership ratings of 17.5% nationwide, 19.2% in the metropolitan area, and peaked at 21.9% in real time, breaking its own record.
