Except for Song Joong Ki, “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” casts Park Yoo Chun, Park Min Young and Yoo Ah In are all controversial
KBS2’s drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”, which aired in 2010, is being unexpectedly re-examined due to Yoo Ah In’s recent scandal.
Yoo Ah In was recently investigated by the police on charges of habitually administering propofol. His agency UAA released an official position on February 8th, saying “We are cooperating with all the investigations and will actively explain the problematic parts.”
Since the case broke out, Internet users have brought up Yoo Ah In’s drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”, pointing out that it is now a drama that they can hardly rewatch because the main cast Yoo Ah In, Park Yoo Chun, and Park Min Young have all involved in controversies.
“Sungkyunkwan Scandal” was based on a web novel of the same name and it gained huge popularity in 2010 by recording the highest viewer rating record of 14.3%.
The only problem is the cast. First, Park Yoo Chun was suspected of taking methamphetamine due to a revelation from his girlfriend in 2019. At that time, he insisted, “I’ve never taken drugs”, and said he would retire from the entertainment industry if the charge was confirmed to be true. However, his drug test showed a “positive” result. In the end, Park Yoo Chun was arrested and indicted on charges of administering methamphetamine in April 2019. He was sentenced to 10 months in prison and a two-year probation at the first trial in July of the same year. At the moment, Park Yoo Chun has already been released and reversed his retirement remark by continuing domestic and international activities.
Then, in September of last year, Park Min Young was embroiled in dating rumors with Kang Jong Hyun, a wealthy businessman. It was also reported that Park Min Young received an expensive foreign car from Kang Jong Hyun, and that Park Min Young’s sister was listed as an outside director of a company that is allegedly owned by Kang Jong Hyun. In response, Park Min Young’s side claimed that the actress already broke up with Kang Jong Hyun, and that “It is absolutely not true that she received a lot of money from her rumored dating partner.”
Meanwhile, Kang Jong Hyun, who is suspected of being the actual owner of the virtual currency exchange platform Bithumb, was arrested on February 2nd for breach of trust and embezzlement.
Lastly, Yoo Ah In was investigated by the police on charges of habitually taking propofol while visiting multiple hospitals. Currently, Yoo Ah In is banned from leaving the country, and his body hair has been requested for evaluation by the National Institute of Scientific Investigation.
Meanwhile, Song Joong Ki, another leading actor among the cast of “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”, also drew attention due to his divorce and remarriage. In particular, after divorcing actress Song Hye Kyo in 2019, Song Joong Ki admitted to dating British actress Katy Louise Saunders in December of 2022. Then, in January 2023, the actor announced his marriage and his wife’s pregnancy, at the same time vowing to spend the rest of his life with Katy Louise Saunders.
Regarding the scandal of 3 out of 4 lead actors, netizens left comments such as, “Song Joong Ki survived”, “Song Joong Ki really graduated from Sungkyunkwan University in real life”, “Scandals broke out just like the name of the drama”, “This is such a glorious K-drama lineup”, “I pity the original writer”, and “The drama is innocent”.
