“Duty After School” concludes with a controversial ending, netizens expressed frustration

The web-drama “Duty After School” receives mixed reactions from the audience because of its ending.

“Duty After School” starts off strong with an alien-fighting troop of students, but ends on a frustrating note for viewers. After persevering combats with the creatures, the whole class was massacred by Yeong Soo (Ahn Do Kyu). The reason for this merciless killing was that he was afraid others would find out about the twisted behavior he did while So Yeon (Shin So Hyun) was unconscious. The only witness of the act was Kwon Il Ha. Yeong Soo disposed of him by hitting Il Ha with a rock and throwing him into the sea. Nonetheless, he started shooting at the class out of a persistent fear that others would know about his secret. In the end, Ae Seol shot Yeong Soo. Only 3 students came out alive.

Only 3 students remained alive

The last 30 minutes of the drama leaves viewers speechless. It is speculated that the end was supposed to be a message about wealth gap and the resulting obsession. Yeong Soo was haunted by the thought of being looked down on, so he was trapped in a never-ending attempts to prove himself. Nonetheless, the cold shoulders he received was often because of his evil and despicable nature. Following his death, the survivors could not lead a normal life. Kim Chi Yeol abandoned the most important thing he regarded, the CSAT, due to the resulting trauma.

Netizens feel the end to be “illogical” when Yeong Soo was able to slaughter everyone, even the most capable students, with ease. Moreover, they find the incorporated message to sit uncomfortably with the rest of the story, leading to a unconvincing ending.
