“Doona!”, 10,000 illegal viewing reviews in China “It’s time for the government to step in”

Professor Seo Kyoung-duk urged the government’s efforts to prevent illegal viewing in China

On Nov 9th, Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University published a lengthy post, stating, “The most frequent reports these days are about the relentless ‘illegal viewing’ of Korean content by Chinese netizens.”

In particular, Professor Seo pointed out the “Doona!” review service on the Chinese content review site Douban. Despite the absence of official services for global OTT platforms like Netflix and Disney+ in China, there are already around 10,000 reviews on the site.

Professor Seo expressed regret, “Illegal distribution of Korean content has become a daily occurrence in China. However, what is more astonishing is that there is no sense of shame.”

The Chinese market not only engages in illegal viewing but also goes beyond to produce imitation goods by unauthorized use of the portrait rights of Hallyu stars. Professor Seo remarked, “It is literally an epidemic of ‘illegal viewing.’ It is time for our government to step in, as it has exceeded what content production companies and platform companies can handle.”

Lastly, he emphasized, “Creating good content is important, but from now on, we also need to pay more attention to building a good system that can be protected worldwide.”
