An “Ariel” animated version inspired by the “The Little Mermaid” live-action is in motion.
2023 was thought to be a big year for Disney. Earlier this year, “The Little Mermaid” was promoted across media to be the next box-office hit with proper investments in both image and plot. However, the movie could neither live up to the expectation of the producers nor the scope of the project. Up to the afternoon of June 14, “The Little Mermaid” live-action touched a worldwide box office of 422 million USD. The movie was well-received domestically but could not make it big in other markets in Asia, such as China, Korea, and Japan.
While “The Little Mermaid” struggles to sell tickets in theaters, Disney producers recently announced an animated spinoff to open the scope of the project. Speaking at the Annecy Animation Festival, Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, revealed that Disney is working on a children’s animated series taking inspiration from “The Little Mermaid” live-action movie. She said the cartoon version of Ariel would be modeled on Halle Bailey’s portrayal of Ariel.
At the same time, an image of Ariel’s character design in the animated version went viral. Overall, netizens’ reactions were positive. Netizens think she has an adorable face with bouncy hair, just like the animated original.
Therefore, more people are looking forward to the cartoon’s release to have an objective opinion on the upcoming project. The animated series is scheduled to air in 2024 on Disney Junior.
