Collaboration stage of IVE, Kep1er, NMIXX, LE SSERAFIM, and NewJeans received mixed review

There are mixed reactions towards the “rookie girl group special stage” at the 2022 MAMA Awards.

On Day 1 of the 2022 MAMA AWARDS, which was held at Kyocera Dome Osaka, Japan on November 29th, the collaboration stage of rookie girl groups IVE, Kep1er, NMIXX, LE SSERAFIM, and NewJeans was unveiled.

In this stage, each group appeared in school uniform fashion with different colors and concepts, and respective debut songs, including IVE’s “Eleven”, Kep1er’s “Wa Da Da”, NMIXX’s “O.O”, LE SSERAFIM’s “Fearless”, and NewJeans’ “Hype Boy”. In addition, while there were members who sang their own debut song, there were also members who covered the stage of other groups, adding freshness.

However, while there’s no denying the visuals and talents showcased in such a stage, there were also a lot of complaints. In particular, the stage is designed in a way that closely resembles a “random play dance” rather than an actual collaboration, people said. Many also expressed that they found the camera work disappointing, constantly boasting full shots of the stage from far away instead of focusing on the performers.

Below are some comments of audiences on a video streaming site:

  • They probably had no time to put it together… This is like a random play dance
  • I was expecting a stage with better production and interesting remixes but it didn’t happy
  • The girls are pretty, but the stage itself is bland
  • The other members were just standing there awkwardly as different songs play
  • The stage planning is poor
  • What is this terrible camera work?
  • All the songs are great, but I wish they could have switched things up a little bit

On the other hand, there were also viewers enjoying the stage, calling it “fresh and fun”, and that people should not condemn the simple but interesting performance.

Alongside this stage, 32 members of IVE, Kep1er, NMIXX, LE SSERAFIM, and NewJeans also performed a collaboration stage in which they covered “Cheer Up”, a hit song of the 3rd generation girl group TWICE.
